Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Associate Warden Business Services, the Correctional Counselor III (Classification & Parole Representative) (C&PR) will be responsible for monitoring and directing the classification process including the supervision of Main Records, directs liaison functions between the institution and Board of Parole Hearings. The CCIII/C&PR directly supervises two (2) Correctional Counselor II Specialists, the Mentally Disturbed Offender (MDO) CCI and two (2) Correctional Case Records Managers. The CCIII will also perform peace officer duties, and other duties as required.
Serves as Re-entry Coordinator for the institution; coordinates release operations by monitoring paroles, out-to-court cases, temporary community releases, and work furlough placements; ensures the quality of Release Program Studies; serves as liaison between the institution and Parole and Community Services Division; closely monitors the Holds, Warrants, and Detainers process; reviews and signs Warden Check-Out Orders.
Plans, organizes and directs the institutional classification process; provides direct supervision of Correctional Counselor II Specialists (Assistant C&PRs) and the Mentally Disturbed Offender (MDO) CCI, and Correctional Case Records Managers; ensures the quality of classification chronos; ensures staff adherence to classification, policies, procedures and goals; provides ongoing training for counseling staff; acts as liaison between the institution and classification services; provides assistance to program staff on difficult case problems; monitors referrals to the Classification Staff Representative for accuracy, assists the Classification Staff Representative for intra-facility transfers and transfers for immigration purposes.
Serves as liaison with the Board of Prison Terms; coordinates parole hearings (scheduling inmates attorneys, district attorneys, next-of-kin of victims) and assists Board members during hearing as required; ensures timely preparation and quality of Board Reports; serve as liaison with the Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services; ensure all victim and next of kin notifications are made within the required time frames; assists with staff training in the preparation of pertinent reports; ensures service of pertinent documents to inmates with time constraints as provided by law. Coordinates with the Department of Parole Operations regarding Detention Processing Cases and Substance Abuse Care Treatment Cases.
Coordinates special projects as assigned by the Associate Warden, Chief Deputy Warden, and the Warden; completes other duties or assignments as required; researches case histories or special issues and prepares written reports; responds to telephonic or written inquiries concerning inmates, institutional programs, transfers, and classification; coordinates with the Chief Medical Officer transfers for special medical needs; provides liaison with the Department of Mental Health (coordination of special reviews, etc.); approves or disapproves attorneys visits during other than regular visiting hours; reviews and assigns or responds to CDC 602, Inmate Appeals, on issues concerning Records Office functions; directs and monitors transportation scheduling for inmate transfers; prepares weekly bed space availability status reports; monitors daily population totals; reviews referrals to the Departmental Review Board for completeness and accuracy; maintains a tracking system for Departmental Review Board referrals and responses; ensures that Departmental Review Board action and/or recommendations are followed through by program staff and/or records staff.
Evaluates staff performance and takes or recommends appropriate action; monitors the compilation of case records to determine policy and appropriate procedures are followed.

San Quentin State Prison is Californias oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.
Special Requirements
**Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
**Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
