Description
A. Treat all students, staff, parents and others encountered on the job with respect, compassion and patience.
B. Assist teacher in:
i. Maintaining classroom organization.
ii. Providing support in an inclusion setting.
iii. Reinforcing previously taught concepts as prescribed by the teacher in an individual or small group setting.
iv. Preparing teaching materials, performing clerical responsibilities and making bulletin boards under teacher direction.
C. Perform and maintain positive behavior management techniques as directed by the teacher. I. e., supervising time out, manage conflicts between students including physically aggressive students, enforcing classroom and school rules, providing close supervision, and motivating students.
D. Follow district, building, and departmental policies and procedures.
E. Maintain staff and student information confidentiality.
F. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, school property, and self.
G. Participate in community outings including use of the Oshkosh Public Transportation System.
H. Assist with the personal care/self-help skills:
i. Feeding
ii. Diapering and toileting.
iii. Hygiene - washing, nose wiping, etc.
iv. Dressing.
I. Transfer, lift, and position students into standers, walkers, wheelchairs etc. as trained/directed by the therapists and/or teacher.
J. Assist with Augmentative Communication/Assistive Technology (including assisting students with computer programs).
K. Work with, direct and provide input back to the teacher when working with student teachers, volunteers, field experience students, and substitute teachers.
L. Assist specialists - art, music, physical education, media and speech, occupational and physical therapists.
M. Assist with the instruction of students with disabilities, both individually and in small groups.
N. Supervise and assist with bus loading and unloading and possible transfer of students.
O. Administer medications in accordance with school district policy.
P. Supervise students during lunch periods.
Q. Adhere to schedules and/or daily lesson plans.
R. Maintain open communication with the classroom teacher.
S. All other duties as assigned
T. Program Instructional Assistance; individual tutoring, small and large group supervision, observation reports, practice and guide lessons introduced by teacher.
U. Encourage and model appropriate behavior.
V. All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
1. High school diploma or its equivalent.
2. For Title 1 elementary schools (excluding Oakwood, Traeger El, and Lakeside) paraprofessionals must be highly qualified (HQ) per Title 1 guidelines. This means they must have an associates degree or higher, 48 post-secondary credits (equivalent to 2 years of post-secondary education),or have completed the highly qualified (HQ) paraprofessional modules and assessments through the District.
3. Currently licensed and/or eligible for WI Dept. of Public Inst. #O070 - Special Education Program Aide License.
4. Knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention (NVCI) techniques or willingness to learn the techniques.
5. Current CPR and First Aid Training certification or commitment to obtain such upon employment.
6. Experience working with children in a structured setting preferred.
7. Ability to interact effectively with parents, students, staff, and others encountered on the job.
8. Ability to follow written and verbal directions as provided by teachers and administrators.
9. Ability to perform basic language, writing, and computational skills.
10. Ability to staff the position for the scheduled workday.
11. Ability to demonstrate self-control in stressful situations.
12. Possess basic computer literacy and/or willing to expand computer skills.
13. Knowledge and/or willingness to learn support technology.
14. Ability to work in an environment that may require demands involving physical interaction with students; within the parameters of state statutes.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:

1. Experience working with children in a structured setting preferred.

2. Experience in building relationships with students and families with different cultural backgrounds is preferred.

3. Ability to work with students who demonstrate cognitive disabilities, emotional/behavioral problems, or developmental delays preferred.
