MalaceHR is seeking an experienced Data Center Chief Engineer to lead our engineering operations at a critical data center facility in Sandy, Utah. This role requires a strong technical background, a proactive leadership style, and a hands-on approach to ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of building systems. Data center experience is a must.

The Chief Engineer will manage a team of engineers and work closely with the Facility Manager and tenants to maintain building infrastructure, oversee maintenance activities, and implement operational best practices. This individual plays a key role in protecting the owner’s assets and maintaining the lifecycle performance of all mission-critical equipment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily engineering operations, including scheduling, leadership, and team development.

  • Maintain a safe working environment through fire, safety, and environmental hazard programs.

  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and physical conditions; create work orders and repair recommendations.

  • Track and report labor hours, overtime, and ensure payroll accuracy.

  • Partner with Facility Manager and tenants during construction projects and capital improvements.

  • Monitor and enforce contractor rules, project compliance, and noise or disruption issues.

  • Drive energy efficiency initiatives and train engineering staff in energy management practices.

  • Ensure accuracy in procurement activities, including purchase orders, competitive bids, and inventory control.

  • Lead vendor management efforts, including quarterly reviews and performance metrics.

  • Oversee testing and recording of system performance data; make improvement recommendations.

  • Maintain comprehensive logbooks of equipment status, settings, and incidents.

  • Participate in the preparation of emergency response plans and training exercises.

  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with company policies and relevant codes or regulations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of Lead Operating Engineers and Operating Engineers.

  • Responsibilities include: hiring, training, scheduling, performance appraisals, discipline, and problem resolution.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable employment laws.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • 5–7 years of experience in data center or similar mission-critical environments.

  • 3–5 years of supervisory or Lead Engineer experience.

  • Deep knowledge of data center systems: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automation, fire/life safety.

  • Familiarity with data center codes, standards, and best practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, safety documents, and technical procedures.

  • Moderate proficiency in trades such as carpentry, mechanical repair, etc.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to professionally interface with tenants, staff, and contractors.


Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).

  • Ability to use measurement and diagnostic tools.

  • Strong documentation, reporting, and presentation abilities.


Preferred Experience (a plus, not required)

  • Corrigo

  • MCIM / Salesforce

  • Zendesk

  • ServiceNow


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and overhead work.

  • Use of ladders up to 30 feet and ability to work at heights.

  • Availability for different shifts, holidays, and emergency response as needed.
