About The Role:

Must be able to commute 5 days a week to Belleville, Michigan. Relocation not available at this time.

As a Design and Process Engineering Intern at Amsted Automotive’s SMW Cold Forming Division, you will work alongside experienced engineers on real-world continuous improvement initiatives that drive measurable results. This hands-on role includes supporting tool design, machine upgrades, and manufacturing process improvements at our Belleville, Michigan facility, while gaining direct exposure to a fast-paced production environment.

Amsted Automotive’s structured internship program is designed to bridge the gap between academics and a full-time career by placing interns in meaningful roles aligned with real business needs. High-performing interns are viewed as future talent and are strongly considered for full-time opportunities upon graduation.

What You Will Do:

  • Support Design and Process Engineers with continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations
  • Assist with tool, fixture, and machine design improvements using 3D CAD software
  • Contribute to process optimization projects focused on safety, quality, efficiency, and cost reduction
  • Participate in hands-on engineering work within a fast-paced, dynamic manufacturing environment
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze problems and develop practical solutions
  • Document project progress and present results to engineering leadership at end of year review

Required Experience:

  • Passion for the manufacturing world
  • Eagerness to gain real "hands-on" experience in a manufacturing setting for an upcoming career
  • Available to work Monday–Friday during the summer internship period
  • Junior or Senior standing in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technologies, or trade school
  • Has participated in projects and tasks in this related field
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Solid Edge or SolidWorks preferred)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Work Environment:

  • Involves exposure to a hot, oily, and industrial environment - Must be in safety attire.
  • Requires working in a fast-paced, hands-on setting with heavy machinery and automation systems.
