Salary: $18-42.00/hr
Position Summary:
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered equipment and vehicles used in dredging and excavation projects. This includes everything from trucks and trailers to excavators, dredges, and barge-mounted systems. The ideal candidate is skilled in troubleshooting diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components and can perform both preventative and emergency repairs in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Repair & Maintenance
- Inspect, service, and repair diesel engines in excavators, loaders, trucks, skid steers, dredges, and pumps.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using tools and testing equipment.
- Perform routine services such as oil changes, filter replacements, brake work, and cooling system checks.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
- Accurately diagnose issues using scan tools, diagnostic software, or traditional methods.
- Communicate needed repairs and timelines to the Shop Manager and operations team.
- Document completed repairs and parts used for recordkeeping and job costing.
Field Support
- Occasionally travel to job sites for emergency repairs or maintenance support.
- Work with operators to identify performance issues and complete field-ready fixes.
- Ensure safety and minimal downtime during on-site interventions.
Shop Operations
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, tools, and parts inventory.
- Assist with equipment inspections and readiness for mobilization.
- Follow safety guidelines and contribute to team efforts in a collaborative shop environment.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment technician.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with equipment brands such as Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, or similar.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in varied shop and field conditions.
Preferred:
- CDL or ability to move trucks/trailers a plus.
- Welding or fabrication skills a strong bonus.
- Knowledge of MSHA/OSHA safety procedures and industrial service environments.
Work Environment:
- Primarily shop-based with frequent travel to job sites for urgent repairs.
- Exposure to grease, fuels, solvents, engine noise, and outdoor elements.
- Fast-paced, hands-on environment with a supportive, team-oriented culture.
