The Opportunity

The Director of Fire and Emergency Service/Fire Chief is the highest-level position in the corporation for providing essential fire and emergency service to the City of Barrie and is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a $31 million fire and emergency service with 5 stations (a 6 th station is being constructed) and over 180 diverse union and non-union staff. The Director is responsible for continually driving innovative thinking and best practices in a comprehensive program of administration, operations, fire prevention and fire and life safety, training, communications and community emergency management.

The City of Barrie is seeking a forward thinking, progressive individual to lead the Citys Fire and Emergency Services. You are someone who works well with other stakeholders and providers of Emergency Response to ensure cost effective and coordinated service delivery.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Two (2) year College Diploma in fire service administration or a closely related field.
  • Eligibility for and willingness to obtain EM300 (Community Emergency Management Coordinator) certificate through the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM).
  • Seven (7) years of experience performing duties related to the above-mentioned major responsibilities.
  • Proven management experience which includes the leadership of others in a unionized environment.
  • Experience developing, managing capital and operational budgets.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • Labour Relations training or experience
  • Proven ability to provide effective command over firefighting personnel and a thorough understanding of the incident management system and chain of command principles obtained through training and experience.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of fire services and the requirements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act
  • Superior leadership, organizational, interpersonal relations, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with elected and non-elected officials and staff at all levels.
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Have sound judgment and poses the ability to champion the department to stakeholders, city staff and the public.

*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure . Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Other Important Information

Location: Barrie Fire and Emergency Service, Station #1, 155 Dunlop Street West Barrie

Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week with overtime regularly

Wage: This is a non-union position with a 2024 salary of $211,994.00 per year ($116.48 per hour).

Benefits: This position includes a comprehensive non-union benefit plan, including but not limited to extended health and dental coverage, life and accident insurance, paid vacation and sick days, short/long term disability plans, OMERS pension plan, discounted rate for City Fitness Memberships and much more.
