Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services within a 48-bed skilled nursing and long-term care facility. This role ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and effective management of nursing staff. The DON will be a hands-on leader, actively engaged with staff, residents, and families to promote a culture of safety, compassion, and excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all nursing operations to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate resident care
- Ensure proper assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of resident care plans
- Monitor resident outcomes and lead quality-of-care improvement initiatives
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- Supervise nursing staff including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and nurse managers
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing personnel
- Address staff performance issues and conduct corrective actions when necessary
- Ensure compliance with CMS, state, and federal regulations
- Prepare for and participate in surveys, inspections, and audits
- Develop and implement policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards
- Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs
- Promote infection control, safety, and risk management practices
- Ensure ongoing staff education, training, and competency development
- Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment
Required Qualifications
- Active Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License (must be verified via Nursys)
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Required
- Minimum 3 5 years of nursing experience
- Prior experience as DON or Assistant DON (ADON) Required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Required
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills
- Knowledge of long-term care regulations and CMS standards
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Experience in skilled nursing or long-term care leadership
- Experience with Matrix EMR system
- Infection Preventionist Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
Additional Requirements
- ACLS certification (preferred/if required by facility)
- Strong servant leadership approach and ability to act as a role model
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead surveys, audits, and compliance initiatives effectively
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting salary range: ~$95,000 (based on experience)
- $10,000 sign-on bonus (2-year commitment required)
