Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services within a 48-bed skilled nursing and long-term care facility. This role ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and effective management of nursing staff. The DON will be a hands-on leader, actively engaged with staff, residents, and families to promote a culture of safety, compassion, and excellence.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all nursing operations to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate resident care
  • Ensure proper assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of resident care plans
  • Monitor resident outcomes and lead quality-of-care improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Supervise nursing staff including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and nurse managers
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing personnel
  • Address staff performance issues and conduct corrective actions when necessary
  • Ensure compliance with CMS, state, and federal regulations
  • Prepare for and participate in surveys, inspections, and audits
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards
  • Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs
  • Promote infection control, safety, and risk management practices
  • Ensure ongoing staff education, training, and competency development
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment
Required Qualifications
  • Active Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License (must be verified via Nursys)
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Required
  • Minimum 3 5 years of nursing experience
  • Prior experience as DON or Assistant DON (ADON) Required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Required
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of long-term care regulations and CMS standards
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience in skilled nursing or long-term care leadership
  • Experience with Matrix EMR system
  • Infection Preventionist Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
Additional Requirements
  • ACLS certification (preferred/if required by facility)
  • Strong servant leadership approach and ability to act as a role model
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead surveys, audits, and compliance initiatives effectively
Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting salary range: ~$95,000 (based on experience)
  • $10,000 sign-on bonus (2-year commitment required)
