Domain/solution ArchitectStart date: April 1st / ASAPContract duration: December 31, 2026 + possible extensionFreelance contract (ZZP)About the roleOrganization is one of the Netherlands’ largest energy suppliers and part of the E.ON group. We serve millions of customers and play an active role in the energy transition. As the energy landscape evolves — driven by decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation — the quality and coherence of our IT architecture across the utilities domain is increasingly critical to our ability to deliver. We are looking for an experienced Domain Architect with a strong background in the energy utilities sector. You will work with our architecture team and DevOps teams to shape and safeguard architectural direction within the meter reading collection and market communication domain, ensuring our systems remain fit for purpose as market and regulatory demands continue to change. You believe that architecture is a shared responsibility. Rather than delivering solutions from a distance, you work alongside engineers and product owners in a co-creative way — guarding domain boundaries and architectural guardrails while enabling teams to take increasing ownership of the design decisions closest to them. What you will doDefine and maintain target architectures on the meter reading collection and market communication domain, establishing a clear direction that balances business ambition with technical feasibility and incremental delivery.Translate complex business and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable architectural guidelines for DevOps teams, ensuring alignment with both organization’s strategy and relevant Dutch and European market obligations.Guide teams in the Agile Release Train (ART) on architectural decisions, maintaining the right balance between technical quality, maintainability, cost efficiency and strategic alignment.Collaborate with Lead Solution Architects, Enterprise Architects and other Domain Architects across organization to ensure coherence across domain boundaries and alignment with the wider IT landscape.Identify and address architectural debt, proposing pragmatic improvement steps that move incrementally towards the target state without disrupting ongoing delivery.Work collaboratively, not top-down. You safeguard architectural frameworks and domain boundaries, but leave detailed design decisions with the teams that build and own the systems. What you bringAt least 5 years of experience in IT architecture, with a strong and demonstrable background in the energy utilities sector.Understanding of core utilities business processes — such as metering, billing, market communication or grid operations — and the ability to ground architectural decisions in business reality rather than purely technical thinking.Ability to take ownership of a domain: you understand its bounded context, logical data model and interdependencies with adjacent domains, and can define and maintain a coherent target architecture.Strong data modelling skills and awareness of the difference between master data, metadata and operational data, including the GDPR implications of energy and customer data.Experience with SAFe architecture: you apply just-enough architecture at the right time, maintain the architectural runway, and create solution roadmaps as living artefacts rather than upfront blueprints. You set guardrails that empower DevOps teams to make local decisions autonomously, co-creating in the solution space rather than dictating solutions, and grow architectural thinking in the teams you work with.Strong stakeholder management skills: you influence decision-making through sound reasoning, communicate clearly in both English and Dutch, and are not afraid to say no when the architecture requires it.You work with ArchiMate, JIRA and wiki tooling, embed non-functional requirements (including privacy, security and compliance) by design, and take ownership and accountability for your architectural decisions.About OrganizationOrganization is one of the largest energy companies in the Netherlands, with over 3,000 employees working on a more sustainable energy future. As part of E.ON, we operate across retail energy supply, smart home services and grid-related solutions. Our IT organisation works in a scaled agile model, with architecture playing a central role in enabling fast, reliable and future-proof delivery. We believe architecture is not just about designing systems — it is about enabling teams, shaping the right conversations and making good decisions at the right time. If that resonates with you, we'd like to hear from you.
