JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Title: Drone Pilot Assistant/Vector Control Technician - Time Limited - No Benefits
Salary: $14 per hour
Job Description:
We are currently seeking a versatile individual to join our team as a Drone Pilot Assistant/Vector Control Technician. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in both coordinating aircraft aerial larval spray operations and assisting with various vector control tasks when drone operations are not in progress.
Primary Responsibilities:
Under the general guidance and direction of the full-time Drone Pilot, you will:
  • Assist in coordinating unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mosquito larval control applications.
  • Assist in transporting and setting up equipment for aerial spray operations; assist in loading and unloading materials for UAV applications for larval and adult mosquito control.
  • Assist in verifying airspace regulations in target treatment sites and assist with obtaining public aircraft operations waivers.
  • Assist in ensuring proper operation of equipment and related systems through pre-flight and post-flight inspections.
  • Assist in calibrating drone and spray equipment components, and performing simple maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist in preparing and submitting maps for UAS application; coordinate with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) division to update maps and import/export GIS data.
  • Assist in coordinating property access with landowners as needed for aerial spray operations.
  • Assist in responding to requests for aircraft services for mosquito control and ensure effective and safe aerial spray services.
  • Assist Mosquito Abatement Field Supervisor and seasonal staff with duties related to mosquito control, including field inspections, ULV spraying, and laboratory work.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with trapping, identifying, and conducting qPCR testing of mosquito populations.
Secondary Responsibilities:
When drone operations are not scheduled, you will perform the following vector control tasks:
  • Conduct field inspections of mosquito breeding sources across Utah County as directed by management.
  • Collect larvae samples and survey for adult mosquitoes throughout the county.
  • Assess appropriate methods for treatment in line with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, utilizing resources such as hand applications, ATV applications for larval control, and occasional ULV Truck spraying.
  • Utilize provided sprayers and vehicles for treatments.
  • Track work activities using GIS software on iPads and computers to evaluate the most effective strategies for reducing mosquito populations while maintaining environmental health and protecting public safety from vector-borne diseases.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience operating drones and/or aircraft preferred.
  • Knowledge of aviation regulations and airspace management.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and obtain a valid State of Utah driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Must obtain a Non Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License (We will provide training and cover the cost of the license).
  • Selected applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
