About The Little Village
The Little Village is a diverse-by-design Montessori-style early learning center for children 12 months and up. The Little Village offers affordable, accessible, inclusive care for families of all backgrounds. Through a two-generation approach to ECE, we support the whole family in building wealth, worth, and well-being. In addition to supporting kids and families, we also provide refugee and immigrant women with hands-on training to become exceptional educators, working alongside lead teacher/trainers and earning their certifications to become lead teachers, assistant directors, and center directors.
The Little Village is part of a larger non-profit called The Village Institute, a holistic family development center providing wraparound support to female-led refugee and immigrant families.
General Position Description
The Assistant Teacher supports Lead Teachers by helping to create a caring and safe environment for children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. They must be able to communicate, listen and work well with others in a team environment. Assistant Teachers are responsible for implementing developmentally appropriate activities based on childrens interests and needs under the direction of the Lead Teacher and additional ECE coaches / mentors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the implementation of curricula activities and encourage participation by children.
- Actively engage in activities; manage cleanliness, maintenance, and availability of classroom materials.
- Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions and progress reports.
- Encourage self-help and good hygiene through behavior modeling.
- Help ensure smooth, daily transition from home to child care center.
- Follow all center policies and state regulations.
- Participate in professional development activities to gain additional skills in early learning and Montessori education.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
- Minimum of 1-2 years of professional child care experience.
- High energy.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
- An understanding of child development.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Infant/child CPR and First Aid certification or ability to acquire within first six months
- Strong preference to bilingual abilities in English and one of the following languages: Kiswahili, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, Tigrinya, Burmese, Farsi, or Dari
- Must clear full background check and must pass health screening.
Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- CDA or 6 hours of ECE credit preferred.
Employment Details
This is a Full-time or Part-time hourly, non-exempt position, depending on agreed upon schedule. Benefits for full-time employees include: 26 days of paid time off annually, portion of health care premium, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, FSA, dental and vision insurance available for purchase, and a 401K plan with match available after two months.
Wage Range
$17 - $20 per hour depending on education and experience
