Job Description

Summary:
The Echo Tech / Cardiac Sonographer performs both adult and pediatric echocardiography studies to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac diseases. This role includes conducting transthoracic, transesophageal (TEE), and stress echocardiograms, as well as assisting with TAVR procedures. The technologist must demonstrate strong technical skills, patient care, and the ability to work independently in a high-volume acute care environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform adult and pediatric echocardiograms including 2D, M-mode, Color Doppler, and 3D imaging as per ASE standards.

  • Conduct advanced procedures such as TEE, Bubble Studies, Pharmacologic and Treadmill Stress Echos, and TAVR support.

  • Perform portable studies in ICU, ED, and inpatient units.

  • Capture high-quality diagnostic images, evaluate cardiac function, and prepare preliminary reports.

  • Assess for structural and functional cardiac abnormalities including valve disease, congenital defects, wall motion abnormalities, and hemodynamic data.

  • Operate and maintain ultrasound and imaging equipment (GE and PACS systems).

  • Document patient information and exam findings accurately within Epic and McKesson systems.

  • Collaborate with cardiologists, nursing staff, and other technologists to ensure efficient and accurate workflow.

  • Follow infection control, isolation, and safety protocols at all times.

  • Participate in on-call or weekend rotations as required by department schedule.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent echocardiography experience required.

  • Adult echo experience required; pediatric echo experience strongly preferred.

  • Must have experience performing TEE and TAVR procedures.

  • First-time travelers not accepted.

  • Travel experience required unless candidate has 5+ years of experience.

  • Charting System: Epic (required); McKesson experience preferred.

  • Ratios: 1:1 (one patient per technologist).

  • Weekends: Rotating weekends required.

  • Floating: No floating between units.

  • 48-hour workweeks not approved.

  • Pending License: Not accepted.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Cardiac Sonography or Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Cardiovascular Technology or Diagnostic Ultrasound preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience performing adult echocardiography in an acute care setting.

  • Pediatric echocardiography experience highly preferred (routine and complex anomaly scans).

  • Prior experience in ICU, ED, or cardiac procedural environments (TEE/TAVR) strongly preferred.

License / Certification:

  • BLS (AHA) required.

  • ARDMS (RDCS) or CCI (RCS) certification required either specialty accepted.

  • Active state licensure (where applicable).

Skills:

  • Adult Echo: 2D, 3D, Doppler, Bubble Study, Contrast Imaging, M-Mode, Pharmacologic Stress, TEE, and Treadmill Stress.

  • Pediatric Echo: 2D, M-Mode, Color/Continuous/Pulsed Wave Doppler, post-surgical and complex anomaly scans.

  • Advanced Procedures: TEE, TAVR assistance, Bubble Study, and portable echo studies.

  • Equipment: GE systems, PACS, McKesson.

  • Professional Skills: Infection control, isolation protocols, patient safety, interdisciplinary communication.

  • Preferred Settings: Adult and pediatric acute care, outpatient, ICU, and ED environments.
