The DNR is seeking an energized and motivated individual to assist with Ecological Monitoring Network (EMN), a statewide vegetation monitoring program. Interns will assist Minnesota Biological Survey (MBS) plant ecologists and botanists with field data collection to establish long term monitoring plots. The work will include permanently marking transect endpoints, navigating with a GPS and/or compass, recording data, traveling long distances into sites over rough terrain, identifying tree species, and moving survey equipment to and from monitoring plots. This position requires a positive attitude and mental toughness to tolerate various types of environmental hazards including biting insects (ticks, black flies, deer flies, and mosquitoes), poison ivy, extreme heat, cold, rain, intense sunlight, and steep slopes. Working in marshes, fens, swamps, and other wetland systems in deep water is also required.

Housing for this internship is not provided. Frequent overnight travel will be required. When traveling, lodging and transportation are provided and the cost of meals will be reimbursed consistent with collective bargaining agreements.

This position is anticipated to begin in mid-May and run through early September. Daily schedule will vary depending on season, field work and weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for an Internship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a student at an accredited educational institution.
  • Your advisor must certify that you will either receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement. The signature of a sponsoring academic instructor is required prior to beginning an Internship.

AND

  • Majoring in one of the following: biology, botany, natural resources, ecology, environmental science, forestry, or closely related field.
  • Possess an interest in plant ecology and botany.
  • Possess moderate proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and database programs sufficient to enter and edit data using department applications.
  • Organizational skills and ability to accurately record, transcribe, and transfer data electronically.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a small team.
  • Ability and willingness to work in remote locations for extended periods of time.
  • Human relation and communication skills, sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in plant taxonomy and experience using botanical keys.
  • Ability to identify most trees in MN by sight.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software (ArcMap, ArcCollector, Survey123, and ArcOnline).
  • Experience navigating with GPS.
  • Experience conducting natural resource related monitoring assessments that require following a standardized protocol.
  • Experience conducting plant surveys that require identifying plants to the species level.
