JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Education and Outreach Coordinator will support the IRRC in its legislated role (per SF 2356) to develop and oversee a dyslexia specialist endorsement for experienced Iowa educators and provide stakeholders current information on dyslexia via the IRRCs website, eLearning platform, and social media. In addition, the individual will support the IRRCs overall mission (per IAC 281.61) to research and inform effective practices for the assessment and intervention of preK-12 students with reading difficulties. This position will also be responsible for carrying out professional development training and consultation around the State of Iowa.

This is a part-time .50 effort (20 hrs/week) specified term position with possibility for annual renewal. Flexible work arrangements including approved remote, hybrid and/or on site may be available. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

This position may require up to 50% travel within the state of Iowa during the academic year. A Drivers License and ability to maintain and meet the University of Iowa driving standards is required.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks
  • Assist the IRRC Assistant Director and Director with the development and delivery of the dyslexia endorsement program.
  • Serve as an adjunct instructor for courses in the dyslexia program and other literacy courses taught by the IRRC. Courses are delivered in both face-to-face and online formats.
  • Assist the IRRC Assistant Director and Director with the development and delivery of literacy consulting services and professional development.
  • Present on-site professional development and training for schools and area-educational agencies in the state of Iowa.
  • Develop dyslexia and structured literacy content for the IRRCs website, eLearning platform, and social media.
  • Create dyslexia and structured literacy tools and other resources for supporting stakeholders.
  • Staying abreast of current research and policies on dyslexia and literacy instruction.

About the Iowa Reading Research Center

At the Iowa Reading Research Center, we apply current research for the development and dissemination of best practices in literacy so that every child in Iowa will achieve reading proficiency. The purpose of the Iowa Reading Research Center is to improve the literacy proficiency of pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade students. All efforts of the Iowa Reading Research Center are conducted in collaboration with educators, parents, community representatives, and policy makers. Results have a direct application to literacy policy and education in Iowa.

Education Required

  • Bachelors degree in education, special education, or communication sciences and disorders or the combination of equivalent work experience and education.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience as a certified classroom teacher
  • Experience assessing and teaching students with characteristics of dyslexia.
  • Experience developing literacy lessons aligned to systematic, explicit instruction.
  • Strong public speaking ability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A Drivers License and ability to maintain and meet the University of Iowa driving standards.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience as an instructor in a teacher preparation program, working with school improvement, or literacy instruction and coaching.
  • Masters degree in education, special education, or communication sciences and disorders or relevant field.
