Position Summary Electrician (Support Staff) – Ipf Maint Serv Electrical Area 40001040, East Lansing, Michigan, United States. Full-time (90-100%) Union position. Opening: Apr 1 2026; Closing: Apr 14 2026. Three vacancies. Salary: $36.32-$41.84 (step progression). Benefits: MSU comprehensive health care, 10% retirement contribution, generous sick, vacation, personal, holiday time. On-site attendance required; no remote schedule. This position will maintain, repair, and install secondary power distribution systems (120-600 V) and related equipment, and install, maintain, and troubleshoot communications and specialty systems (fire alarms, security, etc.). Responsibilities 50% – Install, maintain, and repair secondary power distribution systems (120-600 V), panels, feeders, wiring, lighting fixtures, motors, starters, MCCs, generators, and controls. 20% – Troubleshoot and repair electric equipment, motors, controls, breaker panels, lighting, security, fire alarm systems. 10% – Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems. 10% – Interpret and detail blueprints, as-builts, specifications for repair investigations and project preparation. 10% – Correspond through email, training, meetings, and professional development. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or equivalent technical training. Completion of a trade-specific program (Trades Helper, apprenticeship, associate degree, etc.) or equivalent. Five years of electrical trade experience, including four years of commercial installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. State of Michigan Journeyman Electrician license. Master’s Electrician license required for progression at 24-month mark. Expert knowledge of trade methods, materials, tools, equipment, hazards, and safety. Expert knowledge of applicable electrical codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, national). Valid driver’s license; CDL with endorsements may be required. Must furnish own hand tools. Frequent lifting of 26-75 lbs and occasional over 75 lbs. Desired Qualifications Two years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting variable frequency drives for electric motors and associated controls. Experience with fire alarm, lighting controls, and related network communications systems; customer contact experience. Creative, innovative lifelong learner who communicates effectively, solves problems within collaborative teams, and understands diverse perspectives.
