What You Will Do

Sigma-2, The Finishing Manufacturing Sciences Group, is seeking a highly motivated Lab Manager on the Electrochemistry and Corrosion Team. In this position you will oversee all hands-on duties related to electroplating, cleaning, electropolishing, chemical sampling, and material inventory in our laboratory spaces. You will work closely with the Electrochemistry and Corrosion team leader to ensure daily tasks are executed safely and effectively. Most tasks involve hands-on work in laboratories, including radiological controlled areas. You will work with relatively complex equipment, which requires a sense of ownership to maintain in proper working order, adhering to conduct of operations and maintaining a safe and secure workplace, while meeting mission deliverables. The selected candidate will be responsible for capturing knowledge and modernizing operations. This role will require the individual to utilize his/her knowledge in electrochemistry, corrosion science, and surface characterization to guide and manage operations in the laboratory spaces.

The Electrochemistry and Corrosion Team works with solution-based approaches to prepare and finish many types of materials with a variety of surface finishes, including gold, copper, nickel, and chromium. The work typically involves acids and bases. The team also performs solution corrosion investigations and surface finishing of aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. Industrial surface preparation and finishing techniques are used, in addition to the development of novel surface characterization and treatment methods.

Responsibilities for this job include:
  • Supports all tactical aspects of the Team as directed by the Team Leader
  • Maintain and improve electroplating bench top laboratory areas including equipment repair.
  • Maintain and supervise a user facility for metallographic preparation including equipment, consumables, and work control documents.
  • Interfaces with Support Teams (FOD, IH, Safety Officers) to get resources assigned to Team projects.
  • Ensures that the work areas remain tidy and assists in developing and maintaining authorizing documents to perform work safely and compliantly within the MSC Complex.
  • Responsible for daily team resource efficiency and work execution.
  • Attends plan-of-week meetings and communicates updates to the team.
  • Responsible for day-to-day data archiving, either directly or as a quality check.
  • Assists employees in resolving technical challenges that are encountered.
  • Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Performs morning and end-of-day walk down of work areas, reports issues to the Team Leader.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and skills in area of electrochemistry, corrosion, and/or metallurgy.
  • Demonstrated experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing electrochemical and metallurgical analysis / testing equipment to support materials research.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel.
  • Demonstrated experience in meeting scheduled deliverables or milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability in working independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Experience in handling radioactive and/or hazardous materials
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree and 1 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Electroplating and electroforming of various type of substrates with complex shapes.
  • Experience working with power supplies and electroplating processes.
  • Experience working with reactive, hazardous, and high-value materials.
  • Eagerness and demonstrated record of working as a member of small teams to accomplish tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and careful work practices around industrial hazards.
  • Experience designing and assembling mechanical hardware and applying engineering concepts to mechanical designs.
