Job Summary
The electronic technician fabricates, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, modifies, programs, routes, removes, controls, and repairs communication systems including, Transmission Systems.
This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Coordinate with other crafts to ensure job completeness and to assist with troubleshooting.
- Assess and restock inventory, refurbish telephones and peripherals, excess damaged or unrepairable property and perform inspections of equipment as necessary.
- Read and interpret work orders, drawings, schematics and notes.
- Using test equipment, manufacturer manuals, internal documentation, reference and operating procedures and schematics, troubleshoot and isolate problems at the Line Replacement Unit (LRU) or component level.
- Fabrication, installation, problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of telecommunication systems and equipment.
- Process support request requirements for Paging and Operational Intercommunication System (OIS) including cable and equipment fabrication. Including the installation and repair of headsets, cable fabrication and connector potting.
- Perform software upgrades on sustaining systems.
- Install, maintain, test, and troubleshoot transmission systems used to transmit analog or digital data signals over copper wire, optical fiber, Ethernet or other transmission medium.
- Provide, update, and maintain all required documentation, reports, and logs etc., manually or in electronic databases.
- Make recommendations to improve work quality, efficiencies, and productivity.
- Adhere to OSHA, NASA, Company, and customer safety requirements.
- May assist in training others.
Requirements
- This position is "journeyman-level," meaning workers can start and finish a wide range of cable and wire activities independently.
- Employees working at this level typically require an understanding of electrical theory, exercising independent judgment in performing circuit diagnostics analysis.
- Workers must be able to read and have a comprehensive understanding of electronic schematics.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to pass a NASA background investigation.
- Must be able to pass an initial and random drug testing.
- Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- May require up to a Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Education and Experience
- Associate of Science or Technical Trade School in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science or related field, plus 4 years related experience or successful completion of a State or Military approved bona fide work-related apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor.
- Experience may be substituted for Education: 1.5 years related experience is equivalent to 1 year of formal education.
Physical Requirements
- Requires working indoors and outdoors.
- Outdoor conditions may be in cold and hot temperatures, high humidity, and windy conditions.
- Certain job assignments require special precautions and/or protective gear or clothing due to potential risk for such sources as moving machinery, chemicals, and electrical hazards, working from special rigging, working from heights, climbing ladders and other work platforms and working in confined and small spaces restricting physical movement.
- Often requires lifting 35 - 50 pounds and working on uneven surfaces and standing for long periods.
- Requires repetitive movement, bending, stooping, twisting, and working in awkward positions.
- Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Lighting conditions may be inadequate in some work locations.
- Ability to recognize or interpret differences in wire and cable colors.
- Ability to receive and transmit auditory information using telecommunication or electronic devices.
