Summary Description The Emergency Room Nurse acts as an integral part of the health care team. The ER nurse is devoted to the delivery of Emergency and emergent care in the Emergency room setting with a focus on delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The ER RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The ER RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Responsibilities Must possess the ability to utilize the process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications in compliance with the physician’s orders and applicable hospital policy, interpreting diagnostic tests, assessing and reassessing patients, and formulating plans of care within the nursing scope of practice. Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Effectively uses triage processes to ensure timely and appropriate care to patients; accurately assigns triage categories. Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age, developmental status, mental and/or physical abilities. Ability to assess and reassess pain; utilize appropriate pain‑management techniques and educate the patient and family regarding pain management. Administers medication as ordered by health care provider while abiding by state licensure practices and maintaining proper documentation in the patient record. Demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age or. Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co‑workers, and physicians. Possesses the ability to assess data reflective condition and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s needs. Must possess the ability to document/chart observations and other data related to the clinical condition of the meets current standards and policies. Accurately communicates report of patient status to the transfer teams, transfer‑receiving facilities, admission to hospital, or following shift to ensure adequate continuation of care throughout the patient transfer or stay. Supervises and delegates tasks to the CNA’s and other staff as needed for patient care. Assists health care providers with examinations and treatment procedures. Obtains laboratory samples in accordance with policies and procedures to ensure correct sample, correct identification of sample, and correct testing ordered. Assists radiology with transport of patient for imaging if the level of care requires nursing care or interventions. Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Interacts professionally with patients/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care upon discharge from the Emergency room. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Maintains clean and well‑supplied department to ensure efficient working environment. Assists in cost containment through the appropriate use and conservation of supplies and equipment. Maintains proficiency in laboratory procedures as required in the Laboratory Point‑of‑Care policy manual. Is required to take after‑hour and weekend call as part of the on‑call medical team for the clinic. Performs other duties as assigned and as needs arise. Qualifications Current State of Wyoming RN license with no restrictions. BSN preferred. A minimum of one year’s experience in professional nursing. Applicants with Emergency department experience preferred. Current certifications in ACLS, BLS, PALS, TNCC. Preferred ABLS, ATCN, and CEN. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations, and practices to give and evaluate patient care. Skill to apply and modify these principles, methods, and techniques to provide ongoing patient care. Must demonstrate proficient oral and written communication skills. Strong multitasking skills with the ease of changing directions upon request as needed. Sound analytical and problem‑solving skills. Must have knowledge and understanding of all existing medical equipment. Ability to perform and supervise ongoing patient care. Ability to work in a team‑oriented environment, communicate effectively, and demonstrate sensitivity to patients, visitors, and staff. Working Conditions Subject to varying situations including ability to understand and respond appropriately, effectively, and sensitively to special population groups, including those defined by race, ethnicity, language, age, sex, sexual orientation, economic standing, etc. Frequent contact with a variety of people including prisoners and people with mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Medical office, exam room, laboratory, radiology, emergency room and professional practice settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to rural clinic environments. May require travel between District sites. Physical Demands Varied activities including moving, traversing, reaching, bending, and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including moving, positioning, and transporting patients. Also requires manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination. Requires standing and moving for extensive periods of time. Occasionally must move items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. This position frequently requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Year‑round highway travel between clinics and other facilities throughout the district is required.
