Emergency Room TechnicianLocation: Harrisonville, MO 64701OverviewPosition Type: Full TimeJob Shift: NightEducation Level: High SchoolDescriptionTitle: Emergency Department TechEEOC Classification: Service Worker/Non-ExemptPrimary Purpose: To provide quality patient care by assisting the physician and/or registered nurse.Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: No formal policy setting responsibility.Routine Decision Making: Determining when to report patient concerns, questions, abnormal tests/vital signs to the RN and determines appropriate supplies necessary to maintain patient care.Formal Supervisory Responsibility: No formal supervisory responsibility.Required Knowledge: Medical terminology, normal vital signs, referral resources, triage and emergency abuse reporting.Required Skills and Ability: Organization, problem-solving, computer skills, customer service, written and verbal communication skills.Unusual Working Conditions: Risk of blood, body fluid contamination. Risk for injury from aggressive, combative or disoriented patients. Potential exposure to hazardous drugs and chemicals.Education and Certification/Registration required for the Position: High school education or equivalent and CNA, EMT-B or equivalent certification or experience, BLS required within 3 months of hire. NVCI or equivalent class as determined to be required by the facility.Age Specific Competencies: Provides care to neonates (birth to 6 weeks), infants (birth -2 years), children (2 yrs-12 yrs.), adolescent patients between 12 to 18 years of age; adult patients between 18 to 64 years; and geriatric patients 65 years and older.Population Specific Competencies: Recognizes the importance of diversity/cultural beliefs when delivering care to the populations served at Cass Regional.Essential Responsibilities and TasksA. Assists in the assessment phase of the nursing process for Emergency Department patients. (25% of time)1. Performs quick registration unless patient is life or limb threatened upon arrival.2. Correctly obtains and records patient information, vital signs, head circumference, height, weight, and immunization status on all patients according to hospital policy on admission.3. Assists with preparing patients for exam by the physician upon patient's arrival to the exam room.4. Informs RN and physician of any patient concerns immediately.5. Encourages patients to stay for treatment rather than leaving without being seen.6. Communicates in a non-judgmental, friendly manner with guests at all times.B. Assists in the planning phase of the nursing process for emergency department patients. (20% of time).1. Collaborates with the RN during planning of patient care for all patients upon arrival in triage.2. Collaborates with ancillary departments to facilitate the care based on physician orders.3. Attaches patients name band, allergy band, etc. immediately upon verification with the patient.4. Appropriately notifies ancillary departments when services are requested on ER patients, after ordered by physician.C. Assists in the implementation phase of the nursing process for emergency department patients. (20% of time)1. Assists RN and physician each shift as needed.2. Performs modalities within scope of practice after the order is written by physician.3. Reports any abnormal findings or changes in patient's condition to RN immediately.4. Utilizes principles of the Patient Experience culture and AIDET with every interaction.5. Is knowledgeable of location and appropriately takes care of and operates emergency department equipment.6. Acts rapidly and calmly during emergencies.7. Provides necessary materials when called for during emergencies.8. Correctly performs treatment modalities such as splint applications, dressing changes, sterile aseptic technique, etc. as ordered by physician.9. Keeps patients informed when waiting and refers patient concerns to RN if unable to meet patient expectations.D. Assists in the evaluation phase of the nursing process for emergency department patients. (15% of time)1. Obtains patient's vital signs, height and weight (in kilograms), performs first point of contact screening questions immediately upon arrival as appropriate based on patient condition.2. Reports patients pain score to Charge Nurse if greater than 4/10 immediately.E. Maintains a safe and comfortable unit. (10% of time)1. Removes malfunctioning equipment from the unit immediately.2. Reports malfunctioning equipment to RN and supervisor immediately.3. Completes requisition for repair of malfunctioning equipment before shift ends.4. Stocks supplies in the registration area every shift.5. Maintains cleanliness of the Patient Registration area and waiting rooms.6. Participates in the performance improvement process by collecting and documenting data specific to patient admission times, restraint use, care of patients with cardiopulmonary arrest, falls, stroke, etc. within scope of practice.7. Participates in hand-off communications at shift change or during admission process.8. Attends 75% of department meetings.9. Takes initiative to attend mandatory classes (i.e. Safety) and maintains current BLS and completes competencies on time.F. Perform charting and clerical duties. (5% of time)1. Understands appropriate forms for use during computer down time, when a patient leaves without being seen, etc.2. Answers telephone identifying self and department, each call.3. Assists RN by insuring all supplies are correctly charged on every patient by end of shift.G. Other duties as assigned (5% of time)
