Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Employer Services Supervisor, the Employer Services Auditor I performs a variety of audit functions for TRS to ensure salary and service credit information reported by TRS-covered employers complies with the Illinois Pension Code and the related administrative rules. This position is primarily responsible for reviewing and auditing Annual Reports along with pay period reports. In addition, this position is responsible for the completion of Supplementary Reports, sick leave, Employers Report of Adjustments to Earnings, conducting in-house/desk audits of member contracts, and assisting with field audits and providing employer training. Overnight travel may be required. The field audits, employer training and audits of Annual Reports, Supplementary Reports, Employers Report of Adjustments to Earnings, sick leave, Gemini Reports, and member contracts are conducted in accordance with organizational policies and sound audit practices.

This position requires extensive collaboration, sound decision making skills, the ability to properly structure activities in a manner that allows for the timely completion of assignments, tasks, and goals. The greatest challenge for this position is to quickly and efficiently complete large volumes of work without sacrificing quality.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain an understanding of statutory requirements, board rules, policies and procedures that determine creditable earnings and service credit.
  • Respond to employer inquiries, via verbal as well as written communications, regarding various TRS systems.
  • Resolve problems of incorrect reporting with employers, via verbal as well as written communications
  • Process Employers Report of Adjustments to Earnings
  • Audit sick leave and Supplementary Reports
  • Conduct audits of Annual Reports, which include the review of the retirement contributions and error resolution.
  • Aid employers regarding reporting requirements including automated reporting, excess salary increases and granted sick leave days, etc.

  • Aid employers, members and annuitants regarding current service and post-retirement employment limitations.
  • Conduct multiple employer research.
  • Provide basic training of TRS policies and procedures to employers via verbal as well as written communications.
  • Assist with field audits, in accordance with the audit program, including summarization of findings, recommendations for improving TRS reporting and preparing the audit letter.
  • Perform in-house audits of members salary and service credit information.
  • Assist other departments in answering inquiries and resolving employer related issues, via verbal as well as written communications.
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Articulate and responsive to both employees and customers.
  • Ability to work within tight timeframes and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.
  • Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires completion of a bachelors degree in accounting, math, economics, or related field OR five years of experience in accounting or auditing position is required in lieu of a degree.
  • Sound analytical and organizational skills, along with the ability to clearly communicate, verbal and written, with coworkers as well as the public in a clear and professional manner.
  • Effectively and efficiently prioritize all assignments, tasks, and miscellaneous requests.
