JOB DESCRIPTION:

This is a repost. If you have previously applied for this position, there is no need to reapply.

This position is for 12 months and may be extended up to 24 months or may become permanent.

The Industrial Strategies Division is seeking an Air Resources Engineer (ARE) for the newly established Strategies Assessment Section in the Carbon Management Branch. This position supports California's efforts to meet carbon neutrality by supporting and advancing carbon dioxide removal strategies. Specifically, the ARE will use their engineering knowledge and skills to perform engineering evaluations of existing and emerging carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches.

This work supports California's fight against climate change, implementation of the 2022 AB 32 Scoping Plan, and implementation of SB 905 (2022, Cabellero) to achieve the climate target in AB 1279. The 2022 AB 32 Scoping Plan and multiple independent scientific and technical analyses are clear that for California to get to carbon neutrality, the State needs to deploy all tools available to both reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to capture and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. CCUS as well as CDR are part of this toolkit, and we expect increasing deployment of CCUS and CDR technologies over the coming decades, particularly as Federal support in the form of tax credits and billions of dollars in funding are deployed from the President Bidens Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act as well as the Inflation Reduction Act.

This ARE will support the section by providing evaluations of the efficacy, safety, and viability of various CCUS and CDR technologies and approaches for California. In addition to evaluating CCUS and CDR strategies, the ARE will also support section and Branch staff that are responsible for; developing and adopting regulations that support carbon dioxide removal strategies; developing and implementing protocols and methods to quantify, monitor, and track the GHG outcomes from carbon dioxide removal strategies; identifying regulatory and permitting requirements for carbon dioxide removal projects, reviewing CCUS and CDR projects applying under CARB's protocol(s); implementing approaches to track carbon dioxide removal projects and their outcomes.

NOTE: IF SELECTED FOR THE POSITION, YOUR SALARY OFFER IS DETERMINED BY WHAT YOU INCLUDE ON YOUR STANDARD STATE APPLICATION (STD. 678). PLEASE INCLUDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ALL RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION IN YOUR STATE APPLICATION (STD.678) WHEN APPLYING.

Applying electronically via CalCareers is highly recommended. If submitting a hardcopy application (mail/drop-off), please send an email to Essam.Gad@arb.ca.gov to confirm submission.

You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement.
