Description

The Land Information and Tax Services department is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician. As the designated lead worker for the Analysis Unit, you will be responsible for directing and checking the work of lower-level technicians, or independently performing work of considerable difficulty drawing upon extensive knowledge and experience.


Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

About the position:
You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Land Information and Tax Services department to be eligible for this position. Limited duration employees not eligible. This position is internally classified as an Engineering Technician, Principal. Click here to view the job classification specification.

In this position, you will:
  • Understand and articulate our division's value by demonstrating land surveying knowledge and its relevance to our customers and Hennepin County residents.
  • Provide leadership by continuously innovating around evolving technology and work processes. Direct and participate in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of the ALTAs, topographical surveys, platting, and other surveys requests; and maintain Public Land Survey System (PLSS) information.
  • Direct work for the Analysis Unit.
  • Liaison with the Field Units and other groups within the county.
  • Be an expert by assisting peers with the development of complex projects, processes, and tools to optimize the creation, use, and distribution of land survey information and land survey related maps. Advise residents and customers with respect to Land Surveying.
  • Deliver results by directing and checking the work of technicians in lower-level classes and assisting in determining solutions and resolving issues.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Eight or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work, including specialized experience in the function performed.
    • Current certification as a Survey Technician (CST) Level IIII.
      • Note: Licensed Land Surveyor (LS), Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) Certification or Licensed Surveyor in Training (LSIT) may be substituted for 5 years of the required experience.
      • Note: One of the following may be substituted for one year of the required experience:
        • Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
        • 30 college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science or engineering-related technical courses.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Using computer aided drafting software (AutoCAD, Microstation, Microsurvey).
    • With Land Surveying practices (office and field).
