The Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for an Environmental Health Surveillance Epidemiologist within the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH). DPH works with local and tribal public health partners, and community groups statewide, on a wide variety of programs and services that protect the health of Wisconsin residents. This position offers the option to work remotely up to 5 days per week and can be headquartered at one of the DPH central or regional offices in Madison, Milwaukee or Waukesha. You must have access to both a private workspace and high-speed internet if you work remotely. A greater in-office presence may be required periodically for meetings, events, training, onboarding, or other operational needs. As the Environmental Health Surveillance Epidemiologist, you will be responsible for several key functions in BEOH relating to the surveillance of blood lead testing, corresponding data analysis activities, and monitoring public health response. Responsibilities include: Leading the maintenance, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of systems for the monitoring and analysis of child blood lead testing data for the state of Wisconsin. Responding to data requests, inquiries, and concerns from partners, the media, and the public as they relate to childhood lead poisoning prevention testing information. Developing data visualizations and supporting dashboard maintenance for program surveillance activities. Providing technical support to respond to data requests, inquiries, and concerns from partners, the media, and the public as they relate to childhood lead poisoning prevention. Interacting with and presenting to a wide range of internal and external partners, including local health departments, state and federal agencies, and healthcare organizations. Salary Information The starting pay is between $41.00 and $45.54 per hour (approximately $85,200 and $94,700 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current or former employees is set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. The position is classified is an Epidemiologist – Advanced and is in pay schedule and range 11/03. All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled. For positions that allow remote working flexibility, working outside of Wisconsin or in bordering cities will not be allowed except in extremely limited circumstances due to the need to report to an office location in Wisconsin on short notice. Mileage reimbursement to the employee’s headquarter location is not provided. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process. Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following: Experience using SAS or R statistical software for data cleaning, manipulation, and statistical analysis of high volume (statewide population) datasets. Experience creating data visualizations or dashboards focused on public health surveillance. Experience producing reports or making presentations to support development of or changes to public policy. Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following: Experience working with state lead poisoning data. Master’s degree or above in epidemiology, science, or related public health discipline. Experience working with systems as it relates to blood lead test results (e.g., Wisconsin Vital Records, Wisconsin Medicaid Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS), Healthy Homes Lead Poisoning Surveillance System (HHLPSS), electronic laboratory reporting (ELR), etc.). Experience leading data efficiency and continuous improvement projects and applying scientific literature for public health purposes. Your letter of qualifications and resume is each limited to two (2) pages.
