Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Local Assistance Senior Environmental Planner/Branch Chief, the incumbent is an interdisciplinary team member responsible for reviewing and approving complex environmental documents, technical studies, and analytical reports to ensure compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and numerous federal environmental resource laws and regulations.
The incumbent provides consultation recommendations; confirms the environmental impacts of local agency transportation systems on environmental resources and assists the local agency to formulate and quantify measures to mitigate biological, cultural, and community and land use impacts.
This position provides guidance to local agency consultants in carrying out environmental document preparation and technical work.
The incumbent may work with confidential and privileged information.
The incumbent must establish and maintain a professional working relationship with local agencies and internal project delivery partners and interested parties involved with local assistance projects.
The incumbent must be solution oriented and may be required to suggest and collaborate on innovative solutions to meet deliverables.

Working Conditions

Position located in San Diego, San Diego County

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.


While at the base of operation, the incumbent works in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting in an office.
Frequent travel and field work are required within the Region.
Some fieldwork requires the ability to work in various climatic and geographical conditions.
The incumbent may be required to travel to offices and field locations and occasionally outside the Region.
Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State owned or leased vehicle.


This position may be eligible for telework.
The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltranss evolving telework policy.
Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs.
Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises.
The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.
Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employees designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
