The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the publics health. The division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response; State Public Health Laboratory; Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch; Immunization Branch; Public Health Informatics, Reporting, Technology Branch; Refugee Branch; and Operations Branch. The Division exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events, and disasters that impact the publics health.

The Unit:
The Marijuana Health Monitoring Section (MHMS) exists to measure the public health impacts of intoxicating cannabinoids, including retail marijuana, and other potentially intoxicating cannabinoids. The MHMS is part of the Cannabis Sciences Program that resides within the State Public Health Laboratory and is part of the Disease Control and Public Health Response Division.

This Position:
This position exists to help fulfill the statutory requirements pertaining to the monitoring of health effects and adverse health events associated with the use of intoxicating cannabinoids, including retail marijuana, and other potentially intoxicating cannabinoids.

Surveillance, Investigation, and Response

  • Participates in surveillance activities for the Marijuana Health Monitoring Section.
  • Monitors syndromic surveillance data dashboards for anomalies.
  • Summarizes and disseminates syndromic surveillance data through reports and oral presentations.
  • Actively participate in CDPHE/DOR Marijuana Interagency Incidence Response. Contact, interview, and enter data from individuals reporting adverse health events.
Data Analysis and Visualization
  • Contributes to the management and maintenance of multiple databases.
  • Designs database queries, tables, figures, and reports ensuring data relationships are correct and appropriate.
  • Assists the section data analyst with analyzing syndromic data using specialized software including Excel, SAS, R, and Tableau.
  • Conducts pre- and post-data analysis validation activities and proofreads data results for accuracy.
  • Assists with data imports and calculations conducted in Tableau.
Workgroup and Special Projects Contributor
  • Participates in workgroups, taskforces, or subcommittees with other divisions, departments, states, and outside organizations.
  • Represent the Marijuana Health Monitoring Section at workgroup meetings and shares the results of our work.
  • Coordinates meetings with other public health professionals working on marijuana surveillance projects at local and state levels.
  • Contribute to guidelines, educational materials and other resource projects that will be applied by local public health agencies and other organizations.
Literature Search and Review
  • Conducts searches of peer-reviewed literature on topics related to cannabinoids.
  • Assists in conducting initial review of literature titles and abstracts for relevance.
  • Assists in the selection of peer-reviewed articles to request and fully review.
Residency Requirement:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience Only:
Option 1

Six (6) years of professional experience* in public health surveillance, epidemiology, or related field.

OR

Option 2
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree** in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, behavioral sciences, social sciences, or closely-related field;
AND
Two (2) years of professional experience* in public health surveillance, epidemiology, or related field. .

OR

Option 3
A masters degree** in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, behavioral sciences or social sciences, closely-related field, or closely-related field will substitute on a year-for-year basis.

  • Experience in working with health-related databases and software such as Excel, SAS, R, and Tableau.

  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Understanding of public health principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of cannabinoids and their potential health effects.
  • Familiarity with relevant state and federal regulations related to marijuana use and surveillance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, for summarizing and disseminating surveillance data and findings.
  • Familiarity with marijuana-related public health issues and research literature would be beneficial.
