In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an experienced mechanic who wants to utilize their skills to maintain a variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment. As the Equipment Technician 2, the primary duties are to perform preventative maintenance, inspection, repair, and other services on all inventoried equipment within the Southwest Region. This includes passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and variety of highway maintenance equipment. The preventative maintenance (PM) function is one of the most important maintenance requirements an Area Equipment Technician 2 accomplishes, in support of WSDOTs mission for the operation and maintenance of the transportation system.

What to Expect
Core business hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:


  • Generate reports from the Fleet Management System to identify service schedule.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on all WSDOT equipment.
  • Perform repairs to equipment and vehicles which may include windshield wipers, traction control devices, heating systems, washing, tune-ups and adjustments.
  • Analyze and diagnosis electrical and mechanical problems.
  • Detect and repair safety items on equipment to reduce field down time and extend service for life of equipment used by WSDOT.
  • Initiate work orders and orders parts; communicate order status.
  • Operate a computer to maintain shop records.
  • Keep shop safe, clean, and orderly.
  • Abide by all safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. (Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment may substitute year for year for experience).
  • A valid drivers license.
  • Supply basic hand tools.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to report to the Vancouver Shop within 60 minutes for after-hours callouts or emergency shifts.
  • Respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed.
  • Perform work and/or assist others in a confined environment.
  • Perform duties low to the ground, at ground level, and overhead.
  • Some night work and occasional standby and call-back may be required.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience using Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS) and Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.
  • Two (2) years of experience diagnosing WSDOT style fleet equipment.
  • Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.
