Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Equipment Technician 3 (ET3) to openly support and be involved in the WSDOT Safety program. The ET3 performs journey-level inspections, diagnoses, and makes major and minor repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on all types of vehicles and equipment used in highway and other jobs performed by the WSDOT. Unusual problems that may occur are brought to a higher level (Technician Lead or Supervisor) with probable solutions and outcomes. This position supports the mission of the agency by maintaining the equipment and vehicles used by WSDOT staff to keep roadways safe for travel.

What to Expect
The schedule for this role is 6:00AM 4:30PM Monday Thursday, or Tuesday Friday, with the possibility for varying shifts seasonally.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 3 will:


  • Perform preventative maintenance, repair, maintain all types of equipment used in the maintenance and construction of roadways.
  • Maintain and repair all types of diesel, gasoline, electric and alternative fuel type of motors or engines to maintain and restore to reliable condition; includes diagnostics, adjustments, removal and installation.
  • Trouble shoot and repair all electrical / electronic systems, automotive and specialized.
  • Fabricate, weld, and install additional equipment.
  • Use M-5 Fleet Management System to write & adjust M5 work orders, enter labor, charge out parts, and review vehicle/equipment history records.
  • Order parts necessary for the repair, overhaul, fabrication etc. that are necessary to complete assignment.
  • Attend training and other types of meetings as required.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey-level mechanic, OR
  • Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic, demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship, OR
  • Journey-level standings as recognized by a labor union, OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a journey level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment.

In addition to the above, the following is also required:
  • Ability to maintain a Class B CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and DOT medical certification or obtain within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
  • Ability to be punctual, reliable, team oriented and able to communicate and follow instructions and assignments in writing, through the use of a computer, phone and in person for the purpose of leading, instructing, scheduling, and disseminating information concerning the shops operation and work plans.
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals and other printed materials.
  • Ability to learn new systems and teach/mentor employees assigned to them.
  • Basic Personal Computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Software.
  • Participate and ensure a safe workplace be provided and assure correct Personal Protective Equipment be used; attend and participate in regular safety meetings.
  • Ability to move loads weighing up to 50 pounds and move loads weighing over 50 pounds with assistance.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Class B CDL with N and Air Brake endorsement, no automatic transmission restriction
  • Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabrication.
  • ASE certifications in Automotive and/or Heavy-duty equipment.
  • DOT brake certifications
  • A/C certification.
