Temporary workers will harvest pecan trees and sweet corn fields. For pecan harvesting the workers will remove downed pecan tree limbs to prepare for pecan harvest. Attach shaking device to each pecan tree. Operate mechanical pecan harvester. Sort pecans on conveyor belt. Place mature pecans in bags to be stored. Pecan harvesting job duties include use of hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. For sweet corn harvesting the workers will manually harvest and pack sweet corn by hand and machine. Corn harvesting will be performed in crews where the workers will be pulling sweet corn off the stalk and tossing it into a metal bin and assembling boxes or crates. The corn is picked out of the bins and will be packed by placing 48 ears into pre-made crates. The crates will be moved to workers who will fold and close the lid of the crates and push them down the conveyor belt system. The crates will be loaded and stacked onto the truck. It will be necessary to make a count and check the crates as they are loaded onto the truck. Corn is harvested in the early morning hours starting before daylight, while temperatures are cooler. Sweet corn must be harvested by pulling down while bending and reaching to select mature ears. Workers must carefully select ears of corn of correct size and maturity and toss into bin. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are recommended to minimize contact with the plants and thereby reduce the exposure to cuts and scrapes. Gloves are recommended when working with wooden crates. Work will be done on a farm. Some workers may be requested to work as team leaders, depending on certain duties. These workers are chosen at the employers discretion. The employer retains the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able to but does not demonstrate the willingness to perform the work necessary for the employer to grow a premium quality product. The worker understands that if the worker quits or is terminated for cause prior to the end of the period of employment, the worker will not receive the 3/4 guarantees discussed below and will not receive certain transportation reimbursements discussed below. Excessive tardiness and/or absences will not be tolerated and will result in termination.
