Job Duties:
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of apples, cherries, pears, apricots, pasture, horses and chickens. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/crop production. General Farm/Orchard Work will include the following responsibilities: may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops/farm grounds/orchards; remove rocks from field; paint/repair/maintain farm structures; maintain/repair fencing; perform general cleanup of farm areas/orchards; prepare fields/plant/spray/weed and irrigate trees; observe general condition of trees and apply the appropriate care; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch trees and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; haul and spread soil/products to condition land; mow grass/pasture; trap/poison pests; move containerized trees; dig/wrap roots of trees; care for young non-producing fruit trees including weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by hand and clipping; hand thin trees to ensure proper fruit load on tree; remove bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits; identify and remove fruit that is misshapen, damaged or inferior; prune trees using a variety of pruning equipment including hand shears, hand loppers, hand saws, and 12-foot ladders; prune and thin from the ground or a ladder up to 12 feet in height or from a motorized platform; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers with hand pruning saws and clippers and mechanized equipment; train trees to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire; train and position tree limbs; prop and tie tree limbs; recognize tree disease such as blighted branches in apples and gummosis in cherries; pick up/handle/climb ladders; clear property; prepare for harvesting of fruit including spreading liners in bins and rolling bins into blocks by hand; prepare boxes for packing of products; harvest, pack, and store crop; attach harness, bucket or bag and pick low hanging fruit while standing or on a ladder; pick fruit from tree according to grade, color and size by grasping fruit with hands and removing from tree in a motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on tree branches; carry harness, bucket or bag of up to 20 lbs. and place fruit into containers; prevent bruising of fruit or breaking of branches; perform any other labor considered necessary for the efficient operation of orchard properties; drive, load/unload farm trucks; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; workers possessing the proper licensure may be asked to transport other farm workers. Irrigation duties will include the following: connect pipes/hoses; check alignment of pipe/hoses and adjust for proper water distribution; attach lines to water supply; turn on pump; turn valves to start flow of water; disassemble irrigation equipment and carry across fields at specified intervals; move pipe/hoses through freshly irrigated crops and/or plowed fields where mud may be deep at times; lift and carry irrigation equipment weighing approximately 40 pounds on a sustained basis; start gasoline engines and operate controls to move wheel lines across fields at specified intervals; lubricate, adjust, repair, and replace parts such as sprinkler heads and drive chains using hand tools; observe revolving sprinklers and adjust to ensure proper operation and uniform distribution of water; clear debris from irrigation system; disassemble, service, and store irrigation equipment after irrigation season.
