POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Service / Refractory Equipment Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting refractory spraying and related industrial equipment at customer facilities. This role supports safe, efficient customer operations through proper equipment performance, accurate documentation, strong safety compliance, and a customer-service mindset. The technician works closely with operations, sales, and technical teams to ensure uninterrupted service and high-quality refractory application.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following outlines the primary responsibilities of the position. This list is not all-inclusive, and other duties may be assigned as business needs require.


  • Operates and maintains refractory spray machines, mixers, and related industrial equipment used in steel mill environments.
  • Applies refractory materials in accordance with established procedures and quality standards.
  • Performs routine inspections, cleaning, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of assigned equipment.
  • Monitors equipment condition, material usage, and spare parts inventory; reports wear, damage, or malfunctions.
  • Maintains accurate operational, inventory, and equipment documentation as required by management and customers.
  • Ensures full compliance with company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements, including proper use of PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and professional work environment at customer sites.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors, sales, technical teams, and customers regarding job status, equipment performance, and safety concerns.
  • Provides training or operational support to customer personnel as required to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Supports customer-focused service delivery by responding to operational needs in a timely and professional manner.


QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or mechanical training preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating or maintaining industrial, mechanical, or electrical equipment preferred.
  • Prior steel mill, refractory, or heavy industrial experience strongly preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
  • Customer-service oriented with a proactive and solution-focused mindset.


WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Industrial work environment with exposure to heat, dust, noise, and heavy equipment.
  • Required use of PPE including flame-resistant clothing, respirators, eye and hearing protection, and safety footwear.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work on feet for extended periods.
  • May require shift work, overtime, weekends, and holidays based on customer production needs.
