Description of Job
About the Unit
This Field Survey Technician position is based out of CDOTs Durango office and works under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS). This position provides support as a field survey crew chief by setting up and operating highly technical survey equipment and utilizing survey software for establishment of primary project control, collecting topography data for roadway design and conducting field investigations for locating land and property corner evidence in CDOTs Terrian MOdeling Survey Software (TMOSS) format. This position also provides office support in processing data collected in the field and assists in preparing maps, plans and documents
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conduct all phases of field surveying services including, but not limited to, establishment of primary project control ( horizontal and vertical ), collection of topography data, stakeout of coordinate geometry, and tying of boundary evidence for boundary determination;
- Operate survey measurement devices including GPS receivers, total stations, levels and data collectors.
- Will utilize jack hammers, sledge hammers, shovels and hammer drills to recover/set boundary monuments;
- Conduct calibration checks/adjustments to verify equipment performs within specifications;
- Implement all of CDOTs signing procedures while working in and along our highways; may be required to assist the PLS with the scheduling and coordination of traffic control with CDOTs maintenance personnel or consultants for projects that involve surveying within the traveled lanes of our highways;
- Conduct all office phases of surveying services including, but not limited to, deriving of project control coordinates (horizontal and vertical) using Trimble Business Center (TBC), reduction of field topography data for development of survey deliverables, and drafting of right-of-way (ROW) plans and diagrams using Bentley Open Roads Designer (ORD); .
- Assist PLS with performing checks of consultant field work, including review of ORD survey deliverables, ROW plans/diagrams and property descriptions. ;
- Download and reduce data files from data collectors using GPS processing software and ORD;
- Train less experienced staff in field and office surveying practices and methods;
- Follow the CDOT Survey Manual requirements pertaining to the setting of project control monuments.;
- Use and operate GPS receivers for OPUS observations/solutions and GPS static observations; upload files into the online NGS database and TBC;
- Gather ownership data from CDOT, Federal, County, Municipal and court records; research record plats, surveys, maps and documents necessary to develop and reconcile property ownership;
- Organize, sort, and archive survey documentsROW plans, maps, title information, and field survey information;
- Respond to requests for information from internal and external customers;
- Perform all other duties and complete other projects as assigned or approved by the Region Right of Way Manager and Plans and Survey Coordinator, in a timely manner;
- Sets up project control systems for the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS);
- Conducts UAS flight planning and flight documentation;
- Collects lidar/photogrammetry data using UAS equipment;
- Processes lidar/photogrammetry data for roadway design using specialized software;
- Primarily 7:00 am 5:30 pm work hours, Monday-Thursday
- Travel required during work hours throughout CDOTs Region 5
- Approximately 70% spent in the field, 30% spent in the office
- Anticipated 10% overnight travel throughout Region 5.
- Required to perform survey fieldwork over variable terrain, in all weather conditions, and to work in proximity to heavy traffic.
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
- Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
AND
- AND at least six years of full-time professional survey work experience, with at least one year where the primary duties included conducting field survey operations, including merging GPS and survey data to create survey project delivery files.
Substitutions:
- Satisfactory completion of course work from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university in surveying, engineering, geomatics/geospatial, or title abstracting may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

- A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
The exceptional applicant will be an experienced Survey Technician and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
- Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
- Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;

- Proficiency in the use of current survey technologies such as Trimble GPS, total stations, levels and UAS, ;
- Ability and knowledge to serve as a Survey Crew Chief;
- Ability to, and experience with, conducting thorough research independently;
- Experience applying survey codes and reviewing data independently;
- Experience interpreting survey data and technical information;
- Experience creating right-of-way plans using recent Bentley ORD Sofware;;
- Familiar with CDOT TMOSS;
- Familiarity with researching and utilizing National Geodetic Survey (NGS) control monuments/stations
- Experience attending pre-construction meetings to address survey and land ownership concerns;
- Experience training and mentoring others in survey practices;
- Experience writing legal descriptions, interpreting deeds and analyzing boundaries;
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner;
- Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made and commitments;
