Job Description
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks a Field Technician II/III for the daily operations of the Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP). The CEMP Field Technician will be responsible for assisting in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of weather and radiological monitoring equipment, along with coordinating the maintenance and repairs of the CEMP vehicles. The CEMP Field Technician will receive on-the-job training, learning how to fabricate equipment and components using a variety of shop tools. This full-time position is located at DRIs campus in Las Vegas, NV, however, multiday (1-4 day) field trips to remote locations will regularly be required.
Other responsibilities include:
  • Test, troubleshoot, fabricate and repair equipment and components using shop/field tools and test new equipment designs, operating programs, and communication systems
  • Maintain the work trucks in excellent condition for safe and reliable field trips and arrange for vehicle service to minimize any field equipment downtime
  • Assist with the acquisition, preparation, distribution, and storage of hazardous equipment/materials
  • Keep accurate records of inventory, field logs, purchases, travel, and labor performed
  • Participate in a variety of sponsor and public outreach projects
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • US Citizenship
  • Understanding of AC/DC current and experience with electrical/electronic equipment and systems (such as solar cells, sensors, etc.)
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and familiarity/use of shop tools
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and control standards
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Team player with diverse interests and abilities to adapt and learn new skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in geology, hydrology, or related environmental science/engineering field
  • Wilderness First Aid experience
Conditions of Employment
  • Due to security requirements associated with accessing essential project sites and information, ALL applicants MUST be citizens of the United States
  • Willingness and ability to travel for multi-day field trips to remote locations for fieldwork
  • Valid drivers license required (or ability to obtain one by date of hire)
  • Must be able to travel alone and work in harsh field conditions for extended periods of time (i.e. southwest deserts in the summer and cold regions in the winter), walk/hike across uneven terrain, drive a heavy vehicle, and have the ability to lift heavy equipment (50+lbs).
  • May be regularly asked to work past normal (8 hr) working hours to accomplish tasks
Compensation Grade/Benefits
This is a DRI Technologist position, with a minimum starting salary of $48,487 for a grade 31 position as a Field Technician II, or $52,484 for a grade 33 position as a Field Technician III.
The final starting salary will be commensurate with the successful candidates education and experience.
DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance (flexible spending and health savings account options available); PERS 17.5% retirement match, 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of sick leave accrued per month, 12 paid holidays, and educational benefits. Additionally, there is no state income tax or social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
