FINANCIAL ACCOUNTANT III Apply
The CalSTRS Accounting Division is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Financial Accountant III on the Accounting Financial Analysis and Operational Impact Team.
The Operational Accounting Division is comprised of three units: Billings and Collections, Disbursements and Taxes, and Contributions. These areas focus on accounting for CalSTRS cash collection cycle; procure to pay cycle, disbursement cycle (specifically timely distribution of retirement checks as well as issuing member refunds), as well as accounting for contribution activities.
The Accounting Financial Analysis and Operational Impact Unit is responsible for all enterprise-wide projects impacting the Accounting Division. This includes managing resources across all projects, developing workplans and timelines, completing analysis of potential impacts to process, procedures, policies, systems, and resources.
Under the direction of the Director of Accounting, the Financial Accountant III (FA III) acts as the Accounting Financial Systems Analysis and Operational Impact Manager leading the most complex and unique technical pension and financial accounting analysis of various projects and legislation impacting the Accounting Division and organizational financial systems. The incumbent leads contractors and works closely with Financial Services Branch (FSB) staff and business partners to identify and recommend the most feasible methods and processes for implementing fiscal business needs and objectives for employer and member accounting and reporting.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- Proficiency and understanding accounting systems and financial organization and procedures of the State of California and related laws, rules, and regulations
- Ability to create, develop, prepare, and present technical information and project plans in a format suitable for management/board reporting.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to perform well under pressure while working in a fast paced and multitasking environment.
- Ability to lead, manage, plan, organize, direct, and prioritize complex and sensitive workload issues
- Experience identifying and providing recommendations, and acting as a subject matter expert (SME) on special projects
Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
This position may supervise staff in the future.
Telework Information: We offer a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions with staff working on-site at our Headquarters in West Sacramento 2 days per week.

Background Investigation
Prior to employment with CalSTRS, a background investigation (BI) will be conducted. The BI consists of a Personal History Statement and fingerprinting through the Department of Justice. The BI will check criminal and civil records and, if applicable, verify education and check driving records.
CalSTRS Disclosure Requirements
This position may be subject to disclosure and disqualification requirements concerning economic conflict of interest in government work, including the Conflict of Interest Code that applies to CalSTRS team members and the Political Reform Act, which require disclosure of certain investment information and use of a designated trading platform for securities transactions, as well as filing a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700).
