Summary: Join our Team!!

Classification Summary:
Under supervision, responds to fire and other emergencies. Performs fire suppression activities, basic life support and prevents property loss on NMSU Las Cruces campus and surrounding community. Assists with fire prevention programs and associated activities such as fire station tours and fire safety presentations. Provides non -emergency services as requested. Ensure completion of incident reports and activity reports.

Classification Standard Duties:
Responds to fire and other emergencies and provides basic life support and/or prevents property loss to NMSU Las Cruces campus and surrounding communities. Assists with inspections of buildings to insure fire code/life safety compliance. Participate in any fire or EMS training as identified by Fire Chief. Keeps up-to-date on equipment and protocols and procedures. Participate on continuing Ed courses to maintain their EMS licenses. Ensure that ATV's, fire apparatus and passenger vehicles are response ready. This is not a full representation of all duties and may be assigned other duties as needed by the department.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education: High School Diploma, or GED certificate.; Required Experience: One (1) year of experience as a paid, full-time Emergency Responder or two (2) years in a volunteer or combination paid/volunteer type emergency response department or an equivalent combination of training and experience.; Equivalency: Completion of a post-secondary degree may substitute for years of experience.; Required Certification/License:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge and understanding of fire safety and prevention principles, practices, standards and resources. Knowledge and understanding of local, State, and Federal fire/safety regulations and codes. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Knowledge of and skill in the application of basic on-site emergency medical protocols and procedures. Knowledge of the use of emergency medical transport procedures, facilities, and equipment. Knowledge of emergency medical equipment maintenance regulations and policy standards.; SKILLS: Operation and maintenance of firefighting, rescue, EMS equipment and tools required by the position, life support techniques and emergency medical care. Records maintenance experience, computer skills, fire reporting and fire software knowledge. Above average technical reading, writing and oral communication.; ABILITIES: Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands, communicate effectively in verbal and written form; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers; and other firefighting and emergency services agencies. Ability to provide guidance and support to lower level EMT staff and/or students. Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements: i.e. extreme temp, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, other potentially dangerous materials/situations that require safety precaution/protective equip

Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
