Licenses/Certifications: CDL B (A Preferred); ASE Medium/Heavy Truck; EVT Fire Apparatus Technician; EVT Ambulance Technician

SUMMARY

The City of Chicopees Fire Department is hiring a Fire Technician / General Foreman. Under general supervision, maintains, repairs, trouble shoots, inspects, rebuilds, and overhauls all gas powered or diesel vehicles and/or equipment and any other service as directed by the Fire Chief or his designee. Repairs and maintains Fire Department equipment, including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) equipment and refilling stations, PASS devices, fire pumpers, ladder trucks, ladder tower trucks, hydraulic equipment (Jaws of Life) and other assorted Fire Department equipment .

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE

  • Skilled position with the responsibility for repair and maintenance of motor equipment; inspects and troubleshoots gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine powered equipment; does tune-ups; repairs electrical systems; adjusts brakes and clutches; adjusts, replaces, or rebuilds carburetors, conducts front end work, performs auto body work and related welding and metal working duties.
  • Performs hammering, sanding, grinding, soldering, welding, and filling. May use plastic fillers for repairing dents, replaces damaged parts such as doors, hoods, and fenders.
  • Lays out, cuts, and fits materials to be welded. Prepares materials for welding, reheating, cleaning, and clamping. Welds parts together according to blueprint or specifications using oxygen/acetylene or electric welding equipment.
  • Maintains, tests, repairs, overhauls, and modifies power station mechanical equipment or similar equipment such as turbines, pumps, compressors, engines, valves, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs other duties as dictated by the Fire Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be minimally qualified for this position, one must meet the following criteria:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Five years of experience repairing, maintaining, and overhauling heavy equipment and motor equipment including electrical and hydraulic systems in fire apparatus, including two (2) years minimum employee supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education, experience skills and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted for specific educational/experience requirements.
  • Experience with use of all tools and equipment associated with medium to heavy truck repair.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Massachusetts Class B CDL drivers license is required, Class A preferred.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck.
  • EVT Fire Apparatus Technician; Level II preferred.
  • EVT Ambulance Technician Level; Level II preferred.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
