Company Overview: River Oak Orchards is a walnut processing operation located in Manteca, California.
Role Summary: The Food Safety Coordinator & Fumigation Applicator is responsible for overseeing food safety and quality systems in a nut processing facility while performing fumigation and pest control activities to protect raw and finished products. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, customer specifications, and export standards, while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and pest-free environment across receiving, processing, and storage operations.
Key Responsibilities
Food Safety & Quality Systems –(85%)
- Implement and maintain food safety programs including HACCP, GMPs, SSOPs, allergen controls, and FSMA Preventive Controls.
- Monitor Critical Control Points (CCPs), including those related to moisture control and foreign material removal.
- Ensure compliance with FDA regulations and third-party audit standards (e.g., SQF, BRC, Primus GFS), as well as export requirements.
- Accurately complete any Food Safety Questionnaire as provided by brokers and buyers.
- Maintain traceability systems for raw and finished products, including lot tracking and recall readiness.
- Investigate non-conformances, including contamination, pest activity, and quality deviations; implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Oversee sanitation programs for equipment, conveyors, silos, and storage areas.
- Train employees on food safety practices, allergen handling, hygiene, and pest awareness.
Fumigation & Pest Management – (15%)
- Perform fumigation treatments on bulk nut storage (e.g., bins, warehouses, shipping containers).
- Apply approved fumigants and pesticides in compliance with label instructions and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and control pests common to nut processing environments (stored product insects, rodents, birds).
- Implement and maintain an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program specific to nut storage and processing.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Degree in Food Science, Agricultural Science, or related field preferred.
- Familiarity with HACCP, FSMA Preventive Controls, GMPs, and audit standards (SQF/BRC/Primus GFS).
- Experience in nut processing, grain handling, or dry food production preferred.
- Strong recordkeeping, auditing, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
- Must be able to wear PPE, including respirators and chemical-resistant gear.
- Capable of extended periods of standing, walking, climbing, and bending.
Preferred Certifications
- HACCP Certification
- Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI)
- California Qualified Applicator License (QAL)
- OSHA safety training
Work Environment
- Nut processing facility includes hulling/shelling lines, processing areas, and bulk storage.
- Exposure to dust, allergens (tree nuts), noise, and moving equipment.
- Regular handling of fumigants and pesticides under strict safety procedures.
- Seasonal workload fluctuations tied to harvest periods.
