Physical Plant Services (PPS) supports the educational and public service programs of Fort Lewis College through the delivery of effective operational support, maintenance services and the management of the Colleges facilities construction program. Services are provided by the Service Center, Custodial Services, Electrical Systems, Electronic Equipment Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Equipment Maintenance, Mechanical Systems Maintenance, Structural Maintenance and Planning, Design & Construction work units

This position will provide general labor services for Physical Plant Services with special emphasis on materials handling, minor vehicle and equipment service, grounds duties, custodial duties, snow removal and assisting other work units within the department.

This position is an essential services position and is subject to call out in response to emergencies. An essential services designated position is subject to report for work when deemed necessary for the health and safety of the campus. This includes but not limited to early morning and/or late snow removal.


Job Description:


Job Duties

Material Handling 50%

  • Set up & break down equipment for special events and athletic events including transport, layout, set up and take down tables, chairs, risers, platforms, curtains, tents, canopies, floor protectors, etc.
  • Assist with trash and recycling for the campus. Pick up and empty trash containers on campus and deliver refuse to central containers utilizing truck or service cart.
  • Move office furniture and campus equipment as requested utilizing hand trucks, dollies and other moving devices.
  • Assembling/ disassembling office furniture as required for transport or final set-up


Vehicle and Equipment Service 25%

  • Clean and inspect fleet vehicles. Utilizing rags, vacuum cleaners and cleaning solutions, clean all interior surfaces of vehicle. Clean exterior with hose and pressure washer as necessary.
  • Inspect vehicles for damage and road worthiness by visually inspecting and completing form indicating condition of vehicle.
  • Fuel vehicles, check oil levels and inflate tires.
  • Assist with basic garage equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain service garage in clean, neat and orderly manner.
  • Basic tools used are wrenches, screw drivers, pliers, vice grips, and scrapers.


Grounds 10%

  • Assist with athletic field lining and preparation for athletic events. Utilizing field lining sprayer, assist in applying lines to fields. Assist in measuring and marking points on fields. Layout and pull string to guide field marking process. Set up tents, tables and chairs and other athletic event related equipment as required.
  • Clean sidewalks, parking lots and roads. Utilize brooms, dust pans and back pack blowers to remove debris.
  • Assist with tree trimming and weeding of gardens utilizing hand clippers, loppers and hand garden tools.
  • Periodically use hand and power equipment such as gasoline weed whackers, back pack blowers and sprayers.
  • Assist with lawn cutting and trimming utilizing lawn mowers and gasoline weed whackers.
  • Assist with repairs to the campus irrigation system utilizing hand saws, tape measure and adhesives.


Custodial 5%

  • Perform general custodial duties such as cleaning bathrooms, classrooms, academic, athletic and concert hall facilities utilizing mops, dusting pads, toilet brushes, cleaning solutions, rags and buckets.
  • Provide custodial services for weekend and evening events (2nd shift).
  • Perform custodial project cleaning including carpet cleaning, stripping and refinishing hard surfaces cleaning windows and furniture window washing and exterior power washing utilizing extractors, wet vacuums, and other advanced cleaning equipment such as extractors, floor buffing and carpet cleaning machines.


Snow Removal 5%

  • Perform snow removal from roads, sidewalks, roof tops and other campus structures as necessary.
  • Operate snow removal equipment such as shovels, ice chippers, snow blowers and vehicle mounted snowplows.
  • Distribute ice melt.


Assist with other work units within Physical Plant Services 5%

  • Provide general labor support to other shops as needed. May operate basic hand tools, circular saw, jig saw and drill.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
