JOB DESCRIPTION:

Location: Remote 

Job Type: This is a freelance role (approximately 20 hours per week) at $40-$50 per hour, with exact compensation based on experience and geographic location. Freelancers will work on a contract basis and are not considered employees of the Foundation. You will be responsible for managing your own time and schedule, with deadlines agreed upon for each project. Payment will be made according to the agreed terms, and benefits such as health insurance are not provided.

Edutopia, the influential publisher of videos and stories about what works in education, is seeking a talented and motivated junior to mid-level Designer with strong interests in editorial and product-oriented UX design to join our creative team. The ideal candidate will be versatile, able to take on diverse roles, and assist the Art Director with various editorial and production design tasks across the organization. This fully remote freelance position reports directly to the Art Director, offering an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about making a meaningful impact in the education sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Editorial: Source stock imagery on tight deadlines as needed.
  • Editorial: Quickly create visually engaging custom photo collages or other artwork to illustrate and elevate our content.
  • Product: Collaborate closely with the Art Director to develop digital product concepts to improve user experience.
  • Product: Assist in the creation and refinement of mobile and desktop product assets using Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other design tools as needed.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • One to three years of experience in graphic design, with a strong portfolio showcasing proficiency across a broad range of visual disciplines, including typography and editorial layout.
  • Interest in editorial illustration with the ability to create custom or semi-custom visuals in a broad range of styles.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) and Figma.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to respond to feedback effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high-quality work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a newsroom or editorial environment.
  • Familiarity with wire/stock photo services.
  • Experience in product design and familiarity with UX/UI principles.
  • Familiarity with photography and photo editing.
  • Awareness of current visual trends with a love for experimentation.
  • Familiarity with hand-lettering and social media design.
