Job Description

Are you interested in the past? Do you like solving puzzles? Do you take satisfaction in seeing visible progress on big projects? If so, consider applying for the G. Baley Price Fellowship at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library!

This position is specifically for a student interested in pursuing a career in archives and special collections or a career involving intensive archival research. For this academic year, this position will focus on inventorying and describing the records of the University of Kansas, found in the University Archives. This position will create and update metadata for material in support of University Archives collection management efforts and in order to provide broader public access to official university record. This may include researching the history of various offices, departments, and centers that have existed at KU over the decades.

Additional opportunities may include writing a blog post for the KSRL blog, meeting one-on-one with faculty and professional staff to learn about different kinds of work and career paths in the archives and special collections field, and other possibilities dependent upon the students talents and interests.

This fellowship serves for one year in the KSRL processing department, with the option of renewing while a student at KU.


Required Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate or undergraduate student at the University of Kansas enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours for the fall and spring semesters.
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail as evidenced by application materials.
  • Past work experience demonstrating ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn new technology without formal training.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Must be available to work between 9-20 hours per week during the hours of 9am - 5pm Monday through Friday, in shifts of at least 2 hours at a time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Course work in museum studies, archives, public history, literature, linguistics, or cultural studies.
  • Familiarity with organizations and offices of the University of Kansas
  • Previous experience working with databases, spreadsheets, and data entry.
  • Previous experience organizing and/or working with organizational records.
