Department Information


One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary


The IU Genetic Testing Labs (IUGTL) and its 5 core laboratories of Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, Pharmacogenomics, Diagnostic Genomics and Biochemical Genetics, offer comprehensive genetic testing for the diagnosis of genetic disorders and the ongoing management of disease. This position is responsible for the performance of a variety of laboratory tests within the IUGTL.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs highly complex laboratory procedures, quality control and quality assurance activities in the clinical laboratory.
  • Participates in proficiency testing and have ongoing competency assessed.
  • Documents analysis, maintain records and perform routine maintenance and monitoring of equipment.
  • Maintains general operations of the laboratory.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs analysis and interpretation of patient results.
  • Troubleshoots, reviews, and improves laboratory procedures, quality control, and quality assurance monitoring.
  • Performs activities related to the basic maintenance and operation of the laboratory including creation of lab reagents, monitoring of laboratory supplies, and participation in quality control/quality assurance activities.
  • Maintains documentation and reporting information.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Related experience or clinical laboratory experience.

SKILLS

Required

  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.
  • Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Working Conditions / Demands


The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary


$41,808.00 - $44,304.00 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.

Work Hours


9:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday

Rotating weekend and holidays required.
