Position Overview


This position will utilize Geographic Information Technology hardware/software, spatial analysis applications, and a practical knowledge of GIS to analyze departmental data and produce mapping products that will complement the office mission of flood relief and flood assistance and floodplain management. This will be accomplished by applying GIS products to produce spatial maps, digital elevation models, cross section plots, reports and other exhibits for Office projects. This position also maintains a bilateral exchange of information between engineering studies, survey, design and other OWR staff to ensure complete coordination and integrity of water resource projects. There is one other Graphic Information Specialist (GIS II) in the Office of Water Resources. The requested GIS Trainee will complement the GIS II position to assist with the current and future workload by providing necessary technical support.

Job Responsibilities


1. Under general direction, for a period of six to twelve months, participates in an agency

sponsored training program:

  • Receives extensive on-the-job training in conversion of data for use in GIS.
  • Utilizes GIS to produce spatial maps, digital elevation models, cross section and survey plots, reports, and other exhibits for office projects.


2. Receives comprehensive training in GIS database development, maintenance, electronic

distribution, map production, and evaluations of impacts on natural resources including

lakes, rivers, streams and location of sensitive environmental features to minimize negative

impacts.


3. Receives on-the-job training in organizing and maintaining GIS data so that datasets are up

to date and files are in an organized system:

  • Maintains metadata related to GIS database updates.


4. Develops working relationships and complies with safety rules.

  • Develops working relations with OWR employees, and other Departmental and non-Departmental contacts.
  • Complies with all Departmental safety rules, practices and policies and helps to ensure safety compliance by other co-workers.


5. After initial on-the-job training, accepts and completes assignments of increasing difficulty for

the purpose of gaining experience and developing skills that allow the trainee to complete

GIS based assignments.


6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the

duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with a minimum of 20 semester hours from the related academic disciplines of geography, GIS technology, cartography, and computer science.

Preferred Qualifications


  • One (1) year of elementary knowledge of computer science.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of map creation.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of GIS technology.
  • One (1) year of experience gaining and maintaining satisfactory working relationships with department staff.
  • Prefers (2) years of experience with HEC-RAS Mapper and HEC-RAS.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience in database support.
