The Department of Local ServicesRoadServicesDivision is seekingoneGeotechnicalEngineer internto join our highly skilled and dedicated teamin the Materials Lab.Through collaboration with engineers, project managers, and support services, you will gain hands-on experience withcapital projects, including project design and maintenance. This is an exciting opportunity to provide monitoring and supportto Roadscountywide bridges, structures, and pavement projects.

The Road Services Division designs, builds, operates, and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated King County. The division is a 24-hour per day, 7 day a week operation with work site locations in Renton, Downtown Seattle, and several remote field locations. The division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road, 185 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs,78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

The intern(s) will work with team members to:

  • Provide assistance togeotechnical engineers duringdrilling and sampling of soil
  • Perform laboratorysoil testing under supervision.
  • Participate ingeotechnicalconstruction monitoringand preparation of site visit reports
  • Assist with review of specificationsand testing standards
  • Assist in compiling and checking data for preparation ofsoilboring logs
  • Support Engineer staff on various tasks,asneeded

This position is open to undergraduate and graduate studentswho are currently enrolled as a full-time student and continuing in the fall of 2024 from an accredited institution. You must provide proof of full-time enrollment upon hire, and for each quarter or semester during the regular school year. Current students in civil engineering, construction management, public administration, or closely related fields are encouraged to apply.


Salary Information

  • Intern II - Undergraduate pay range is $20.10 to $22.48/hourly
  • Intern III - Graduate pay range is $22.63to $28.69/hourly?

Job Details

  • Work Location: A combination of teleworking and in-office work at the Roads Maintenance office - 155 Monroe Ave NE, Renton, Washington. Occasional in-person work at various King County facilities or project locations may also be required.
  • Work Hours & Schedule: This full-time position works 40- hours per week - 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, or as otherwise negotiated.
  • FLSA Status: This position is non-exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is not union represented.

?Teleworking Requirements
Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

When teleworking, you are required to have an adequate home office space and maintain a workspace with an internet connection where you can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. The county will supply necessary IT equipment. In addition, King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
