Health Unit Coordinator - Part Time / Nights At Island Health, people are at the center of everything we do. As a part of the Acute Care / Med Surg Nursing team, you'll play a vital role in supporting our mission to care for those who care for others. You'll help create a positive and seamless experience for every team member ensuring they feel valued, supported, and heard. The Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for clerical functions in the Nursing Department. The HUC acts as a receptionist, performs tasks necessary to schedule patients, coordinates communication, and is a messenger for the nursing staff. This position helps to facilitate and support the nursing philosophy, goals and objectives at Island Hospital and supports nurses and physicians in providing quality patient care. Location: Anacortes, WA, Onsite Schedule: Part Time / 0.6 FTE per week Salary Range: $20.50 $30.48 per hour Shift Differential: Night Differential - $2.25 Evening Differential - $1.65 Weekend Differential - $1.50 What you will be doing: The HUC possesses a global understanding of the desk work within the department and understands the patient admission and discharge processes and assists in facilitating and supporting the staff, providers and patients through this process. The HUC maintains a professional demeanor at all times and operates effectively in the dynamic environment of the nursing unit. Communications: Answers phone and directs calls to appropriate person when appropriate. Relays urgent messages as necessary. Facilitates communication to and among physicians, nurses, patients and staff. Handles all telephone calls in a friendly, courteous manner; identifying hospital, name and position title. Demonstrates open and timely communication with patients, their significant others, and team members to ensure the occurrence of effective intervention. Computer: Utilizes computer to enter/order lab work, respiratory therapy orders, x-rays and all tests and procedures ordered by physician. Discharges patients from computer. Makes daily checks of Meditech messages to receive information from Administration/ Managers/ Supervisors/Charge Nurses in a timely manner. Patient Charts: Assembles charts on admission, and obtains previous charts. Copies chart as directed when patient is transferred. Separates charts of discharged patients and sends to Medical Records to be processed. Place surgery pack and consent on chart when ordered. Courier: Retrieve medical records on admits after hours, Maintaining Supply Inventory & Stock: Orders supplies bi-weekly. Calls in interim orders to Materials Management as required. Schedules: Outpatient x-rays, labs, office appointments, MIBI, sleep studies. Arranges for inpatient echocardiograms consults and referrals. Obtain consents to fax, send information needed to schedule appropriate appointments as ordered per MD. Patient Care: Assists nurse or coordinator in patient care, i.e., vital signs, positioning, transferring, warm blankets, answering call lights, reporting unusual findings to RN or Coordinator. Tidies and cleans patient areas as needed and nursing stations (never leave main nursing station unattended). Other Tasks: Completes other tasks as assigned by the Nursing Directors; including collecting monthly statistics, assisting with patient call-backs, organizing notebooks, etc. Completes fire safety review, infection control, and body mechanics review yearly in accordance with hospital policy. Obtains continuing education consistent with level of practice at least one day per year. Must have demonstrated ability to interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co-workers, subordinates, patients and visitors. What you will bring to the role: High School Diploma or GED. Current CNA Certification required. Current BLS certification. Is able to prioritize and re-prioritize appropriately. Able to perform multiple tasks and be flexible when priorities change. Adaptable in stressful high-volume and high-acuity situations, while maintaining an even temperament and calm demeanor. Appears in control of situations when census and workload increases, always remembering the need to present a professional appearance.
