The Town of Sullivan is presently seeking qualified, experienced Heavy Equipment Operators to join their growing team. This is manual work involving the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of heavy automotive equipment used in road and bridge maintenance and construction. The duties also involve the performance of a variety of manual tasks and minor automotive repair work. The work is performed under the general supervision of higher-level personnel with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate personnel. Typical Work Activities: Operates power shovel, bulldozer, power grader, crane, bucket loader, and other types of heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges; Operates equipment in connection with the removal of snow, refuse, and in the transportation of stone, gravel and other materials; Operates heavy equipment in connection with cutting banks, cutting and filling ditches, removing stumps, stripping gravel pits and related highway department tasks; Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on assigned equipment; Performs a variety of manual tasks such as loading and unloading trucks, digging and filling ditches, spreading asphalt, cutting trees and brush, cleaning culverts and raking blacktop, shoveling snow, painting and road maintenance work etc., using related equipment and tools; May patrol highway during winter season to determine the need for snow removal and ice control activities, as directed by the Highway Superintendent, General Highway Supervisor or designee; May supervise the work of others; Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Personal Characteristics: Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of heavy automotive equipment; good knowledge of the vehicle and traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of heavy equipment; ability to perform minor automotive repairs; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to get along well with others; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude; good hand and eye coordination. Minimum Qualifications: One (1) year of full-time paid experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation of specialized or heavy motor equipment; OR Two (2) years of full-time paid experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation of lighter automotive equipment. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). NYS Inspector license preferred CDL license preferred Experience in prior role working as a diesel mechanic Ability to work on-call, as needed Please note this shift operates 7am-3:30pm Hourly pay is $27.00 - $32.84 depending on prior work experience Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision) Retirement Plan (401k, IRA) Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D) Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays) Short Term & Long Term Disability Training & Development #J-18808-Ljbffr
