In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two experienced maintenance professionals ready and willing to provide leadership, guidance, and support for employees tasked with roadway and roadside maintenance. We are seeking to fill positions in Davenport, WA and Ritzville, WA. As the Highway Maintenance Supervisors, you will work independently to plan, budget, schedule, and supervise highway maintenance crews engaged in specialized maintenance, repair, and reconstruction of highway features. An effective Maintenance Supervisor must have good communication skills, exhibit leadership qualities, facilitate and provide training in support of workforce development, support management, extend trust, be accountable, provide recognition, and demonstrate inclusion with all employees and customers.

What to Expect
The work for these positions is split between a field or shop setting and an office setting. When in a field setting, work is performed on uneven terrain next to live traffic and with heavy equipment. A typical summer schedule is 40- hours a week, for 4,10-hour days Monday-Thursday. The winter schedule is typically forty hours with schedule Monday through Friday. Work alternate and emergency shifts as situations dictate.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Supervisor will:


  • Establish, implement, and manage highway maintenance and roadside safety rest area maintenance procedures.
  • Be responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of maintenance activities and procedures within the Eastern Region WSDOT in Area 3.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Area 3 team members in highway maintenance, and roadside safety rest area operations and maintenance.
  • Administer fiscal and biennium budget allocation for maintenance activities.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Coordinate after hours emergency work with the HMW4 and HMW3 to meet the needs and scope of emergencies.
  • Coordinate traffic control and responses with external agencies.
  • Manage the Integrated Vegetation Management Program for the Highway Rights of Way in Area 3.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Lead Tech (HMW3); or two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Tech 2 (HMW2); or three (3) three years of experience performing roadway maintenance, or heavy equipment operation or equivalent.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License with N endorsement and without airbrake restrictions.
  • WA State Dept. of Agriculture Public Operator Pesticide License or ability to obtain pesticide license within 1 year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid Card within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to perform work on uneven terrain next to live traffic with heavy equipment.
  • A high-level of awareness and attention to safety.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • A High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, or one year experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 4.
