Job Description and Duties

The CalSTRS Communications Division is seeking a motivated individual to work as an Information Officer II (Specialist) on the Content and Web Management Team.

The Communications Division provides strategic communications, targeted messaging and CalSTRS benefits information through a variety of delivery channels focused on creating increased awareness among members, employers, employees and various other stakeholders.
Communications offers the following services to create clear, engaging communications: digital signage, webinars, writing and editing, graphic design, internal and external communications, media/press relations, external relations, publications, building signage, email newsletters, television/video services and broadcast, social media and website content.
Communications also regularly assesses the reputation and organizational risk environment pertaining to issues where CalSTRS has potential exposure in order to develop effective mitigation strategies and action plans.

The Content and Web Management Team in Communications is responsible for creating and posting content to our website, CalSTRS.
com and our various social media platforms.

Under supervision of the Information Officer II (Supervisor), the Information Officer II (Specialist) serves as the Social Media and Web Content Specialist.
The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of CalSTRS social media and web strategy to effectively communicate complex concepts to employees, members, and stakeholders across an array of subject matters.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
  • Ability to manage and monitor social media workflow and strategy to meet communications goals of the organization.
  • Ability to oversee and implement strategies for marketing web, social media and email to targeted audience.
  • Knowledge of social media and web best practices with the ability to lead and advise leadership.
  • Ability to analyze social media and web metrics to effectively develop content and strategies.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with other CalSTRS employees, our members, and their beneficiaries.
  • Ability to apply excellent time management skills used for efficient completion of projects, prioritize competing assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player and work collaboratively across teams, from inside Communications to other business areas.
  • Experience collaborating with visual and/or graphics teams to create digital and video content for website and social platforms.


Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.

Telework Information:
We offer a hybrid approach including 2 days in-office and 3 days remote work solutions with staff working on-site at our Headquarters in West Sacramento.

Background Investigation

Prior to employment with CalSTRS, a background investigation (BI) will be conducted.
The BI consists of a Personal History Statement and fingerprinting through the Department of Justice.
The BI will check criminal and civil records and, if applicable, verify education and check driving records.


CalSTRS Disclosure Requirements

This position may be subject to disclosure and disqualification requirements concerning economic conflict of interest in government work, including the Conflict of Interest Code that applies to CalSTRS team members and the Political Reform Act, which require disclosure of certain investment information and use of a designated trading platform for securities transactions, as well as filing a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700).
