Job Description

MATRIX is seeking a Project Manager to support the development, design, planning, and construction of hydroelectric powerhouse projects. This role is responsible for coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing schedules and budgets, and ensuring safe, high-quality delivery of hydroelectric facilities from early feasibility through commissioning.


The ideal candidate brings experience in hydropower, heavy civil construction, or renewable energy infrastructure, with a strong understanding of powerhouse structures, mechanical and electrical systems, and regulatory coordination.


DURATION: 6 months with possible extension

LOCATION: Pike Island Lock and Dam which is the fifth lock and dam on the Ohio River, located in Yorkville, Ohio 84 miles downstream of Pittsburgh


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBLITIES:


Project Development & Planning

  • Support early-stage project development activities, including feasibility studies, site evaluations, constructability reviews, and cost estimates
  • Assist in defining project scope, execution strategies, and delivery models
  • Support permitting and regulatory coordination with federal, state, and local agencies

Design & Engineering Coordination

  • Coordinate with civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams during design development
  • Review drawings, specifications, and technical submittals to ensure alignment with project requirements
  • Track design deliverables, milestones, and approvals

Construction Management

  • Support on-site construction activities for hydroelectric powerhouses, including civil works, turbine-generator installation, balance-of-plant systems, and electrical infrastructure
  • Coordinate contractors, suppliers, inspectors, and commissioning teams
  • Monitor construction progress, quality, and compliance with contract documents

Schedule, Cost & Risk Management

  • Develop and maintain project schedules and budgets
  • Track progress, costs, and forecasts; assist with change management and risk mitigation
  • Support procurement planning, vendor evaluations, and contract administration

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Promote a strong safety culture and support implementation of site safety plans
  • Ensure work complies with applicable codes, standards, environmental permits, and regulatory requirements
  • Support quality assurance, inspections, testing, and commissioning activities

Reporting & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Prepare regular project status reports and dashboards
  • Support communication with internal stakeholders, partners, regulators, and consultants
  • Document decisions, action items, and lessons learned


QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in project management or project engineering roles
  • Experience in hydropower, renewable energy, heavy civil, or industrial infrastructure projects
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency with project management and scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, Excel, etc.)


PREFERRED:

  • Direct experience with hydroelectric powerhouses or water resource projects
  • Familiarity with turbine-generator systems and balance-of-plant equipment
  • Experience with permitting agencies (e.g., FERC, state environmental agencies)
  • PMP or equivalent certification
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in complex project environments
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive problem-solving approach
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and environmental stewardship
