Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive assessments of critically ill patients
  • Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and neurological status
  • Administer IV medications, vasopressors, sedatives, and other critical therapies
  • Operate and manage advanced life-support equipment such as ventilators and infusion pumps
  • Provide care for patients with organ failure, severe infections, trauma, or post-surgical complications
  • Respond rapidly to emergencies and participate in resuscitation efforts
  • Interpret lab results and diagnostic data to guide patient care
  • Educate patients and families about conditions, treatments, and recovery expectations
  • Maintain detailed patient documentation and ensure adherence to safety and infection control standards

ICU RNs frequently care for patients with:

  • Respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation
  • Sepsis or severe infections
  • Cardiac arrest or severe cardiac conditions
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Stroke or neurological emergencies
