The technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of cabling, infrastructure, and equipment that supports campus network and telecommunication services. Installation activities include but are not limited to structured data cabling, communications hardware and endpoints, and network switching and Wi-Fi infrastructure. With general instruction on new activities or special projects, the technician performs routine and assigned work, and evaluates and selects solutions based on established options and procedures. With a focus on maintaining and improving campus network services, the technician utilizes advanced technical and operational experience and a broad knowledge of processes and tools. The technician works independently and collaborates with IT technicians, contractors, specialists, engineers, and architects on expansions to network service offerings, and supports the network leaderships vision, providing feedback and making recommendations to improve network performance and user experience.
The technician will perform reactive maintenance and repair of network physical infrastructure through triaging, troubleshooting, identification, and resolution of issues in Columbus, regional campuses, and Ohio State extension offices. The technician will also participate in a weekly on-call schedule and occasional after-hours support on nights, weekends, and/or holidays. All these responsibilities will be accomplished while representing the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation with students, faculty, staff, partners, affiliates, and visitors through unparalleled customer service and professionalism while delivering efficient and economical solutions for the benefit of users and associated colleges and business units.
Required Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED and/or applicable certification or vocational training
Two (2) years of telecommunications infrastructure experience in an enterprise environment
One or more years of fiber, copper, and/or coaxial cabling, terminating, and testing experience for networking systems
Knowledge of BICSI, Jones/NCTI, and/or other industry and AV standards
Effective written and verbal customer service and communication skills with ability to convey technical information with clarity and concision
Ability to learn new technologies and methods
Ability to work both independently and within a team
Comfortable climbing and completing work on step ladders and within tight spaces
A valid Ohio driver's license and ability to respond to emergencies after hours
Desired Education and Experience Associate level degree in a technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Four (4) to Six (6) years of telecommunications infrastructure experience in an enterprise environment
Certification in BICSI, Jones, NCTI and/or other industry and AV standards
Knowledge of installation and turn-up of wired and Wi-Fi network equipment
Familiarity with ITIL processes and good practices
This role is a term position - one year term. The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $22.93/hour to $28.99/hour .
