Java Technical Lead Job Description – Java Technical Lead Location: Onsite – McLean, VA Company: 22nd Century Technologies Employment Type: Full-Time Work Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Clearance: Not required; active federal clearance is a plus About the Role 22nd Century Technologies is seeking a highly technical and hands-on Java Technical Lead to support enterprise-scale federal initiatives and internal strategic technology programs. This role requires a strong engineering leader with deep Java expertise, architecture experience, and proven success delivering solutions within federal contracting environments. The ideal candidate is a technically elite professional who can lead development teams, architect scalable systems, engage with stakeholders, and drive modernization efforts while remaining hands-on with coding and technical problem-solving. This position is onsite at TSCTI Headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Key Responsibilities Lead the design, development, and deployment of enterprise-grade Java applications and distributed systems Serve as the technical authority for architecture, coding standards, system integration, and application modernization initiatives Provide hands-on development support across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) Mentor and guide developers, conduct code reviews, and establish engineering best practices Collaborate with program managers, federal stakeholders, architects, DevOps engineers, and cross-functional teams Design and implement secure, scalable, high-performance microservices and APIs Support cloud-native application development and modernization efforts Troubleshoot complex technical issues and drive root-cause analysis Ensure compliance with federal security, governance, and development standards Participate in solution design discussions, proposal support, and technical strategy initiatives as needed Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field 10+ years of software engineering experience with strong focus on Java technologies 3+ years in a Technical Lead or Lead Architect role Proven experience supporting federal government contracts or federal systems integrator environments Deep expertise in: Java 8/11/17+ Spring Boot and Spring Framework RESTful API development Microservices architecture Multithreading and performance optimization SQL and NoSQL databases Distributed systems and enterprise integration patterns Strong experience with: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform Docker and Kubernetes CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices Git, Maven, Jenkins, SonarQube Strong understanding of secure coding practices and enterprise application security Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills Ability to work onsite in McLean, VA Preferred Qualifications Active or previously held federal security clearance Experience with: Federal agencies and government modernization programs Agile/Scrum delivery environments Event-driven architecture and messaging platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.) Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) Enterprise architecture frameworks Certifications such as: AWS Certified Solutions Architect Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) Oracle Java Certification What We're Looking For We are looking for a highly technical leader who: Leads from the front and remains hands-on with architecture and development Thrives in fast-paced federal consulting environments Can balance strategic technical leadership with execution Has strong problem-solving capabilities and engineering depth Is comfortable interfacing with executives, customers, and technical teams alike Why Join Us At 22nd Century Technologies, you will work alongside innovative teams supporting mission-critical initiatives for federal and enterprise customers.
