What you can expect

As an integral member of the UK Product Creation team, the junior editor will play a key role in supporting the editorial team in many aspects of the editorial process.
You will mostly be working with our Repertoire publications and digital content, ranging from Pop & Rock titles to Contemporary Classical folios, with a focus on the proofing and editing stages of the process.
There will be the opportunity to contribute to the conceptual and developmental stages of a project, as well as liaising with external suppliers.
This is an excellent position for someone wanting a solid grounding in printed music publishing alongside the opportunity to contribute to our fast-growing music tech platforms, with the opportunity to grow their role through experience.

We are looking for candidates with the following skills

  • Passion for music and an interest in current music trends.
    This role will be exposed to Pop, Rock and Classical music but were keen for candidates to bring their own musical interests to this role.
  • Strong background knowledge in music theory and interest in printed music.
  • Excellent piano/keyboard skills, additional instrument proficiency is desirable but not essential.
  • A bachelors degree in music or equivalent level of experience in transcribing/arranging or music analysis.
  • Applies a strong understanding of Hal Leonard Europe and our products.
  • Strong attention to detail and brings a methodical approach to proofing and digitisation tasks.
  • Brings a basic understanding of music transcribing.
  • A high level of sight-reading skills and ability to write clear prose.
  • Excellent organisational skills as this role involves working across the Product Creation team on multiple different tasks from different teams.
  • Brings confident communication to relationship building and networking with internal employees and external partners.
  • Ability to bring passion, innovation and a self-starter mindset to tasks and relationship building.
  • Brings an open mindset to learning new processes and systems whilst applying previous knowledge of Microsoft Suite and standard IT processes.
  • Experience using Sibelius and Microsoft Office, with experience using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat preferred.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of Hal Leonard products and identify gaps in the music-making market.
  • Edit text and music notation for our Repertoire products, in preparation for print and digital publication, and implementing music notation edits in Sibelius.
  • Confidently proofread music publications to prepare for production.
  • Collaborate across a variety of teams on different music publications of different genres.
  • Process music engravings to upload to our digital sheet music platforms.
  • Independently handle editorial-related queries from the customer services and sales teams, such as digital access code issues or content enquiries, raising to Managing Editor for support.
  • Collate existing assets such as music engravings, audio, copy or other content for use in new publications.
  • Support the Managing Editor across administrative work, ad-hoc projects and day-to-day editorial tasks to gain a wide experience of the world of editorial.

The Team

This is a full-time permanent position reporting to the Managing Editor, UK within the Product Creation department.
You may be asked to support the wider European editorial team with miscellaneous tasks from time to time.

Place of Work and Hours

  • This role is based remotely (with access to meet with the London team as and when required)
  • Working hours are 9am 5.
    30pm, working a total of 37.
    5 hours per week.
    Start, finish and lunch times can be flexed in agreement with your manager.
